mdrrus 0 #53 August 18, 2004 I agree with Skymama, she' right on. The 200 Free event had four of the best swimmers ever in the same pool, and Phelps medaled with an American record. Third best in the world at 19 is incredible! Watch out in 2008. I was involved with the olympics in 84 and was in a position to see the crap that the media pushes on people, and tries to make the news their way not the way it really happens. Jim Lampley is the exception in 84 he was totally fair then and still is.

Dagny 0 #61 August 18, 2004 Concerning Phelps and his performance at the Olympics.... I think he has done an outstanding job. One would be remiss to think otherwise. A young man, not a braggart, I consider him to be an exemplary athlete. He carries the pressure of a nation (or the media of that nation) hell bent on seeing multiple records being broken. It's his first olympics and he achieved a gold in his first final. That's an incredible accomplishment. The fact that he continues to medal shows both the skill and potential he has as an athlete. I think that anyone who earns a gold medal (or silver or bronze) has the right, even if just for a small moment in time, to be recognized as the best in the world. And anyone who has the talent to attend the games, even if they don't medal, should feel proud of the dedication and accomplishment. As athletes, they should be respected, even if we are unable to agree that their "sport" is truly worthy of being deemed such. The fact of the matter is, these people dedicated themselves to the pursuit of excellence in an olympic sport and worked damn hard to qualify for their games. I have a lot of respect and admiration for that kind of commitment. Personally, I feel that Phelps, and all the other American Olympians are doing their family, their home, their country proud.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali

CanuckInUSA 0 #64 August 19, 2004 QuoteAs for the announcers. Ugh, I don't remember being this annoyed even when John Tesh was an announcer. Al Trautwig (sp?) drives me nuts. I've never heard someone sound so ignorant in so many sports. Outdoor Life Network hired him this year to announce the prime time coverage of the Tour de France. Instead of waiting until prime time I got up every morning at 7:30am to watch the live coverage just so I didn't have to listen to him. I hear that OLN got lots of letters complaining about him. As usual, NBC's coverage of the Olympics is a joke. But what else is new? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
kelel01 1 #65 August 19, 2004 I'm just curious as to how all of you would improve the coverage of the Olympics. I guess there's something I'm missing, because I'm enjoying it. The announcers do have a tendency to pick favorites, but it's not always the US. Kelly
CanuckInUSA 0 #66 August 19, 2004 The thing that gets me is that NBC prefers NOT to show live event coverage and instead to prefers to delay the coverage so as to alter an event to show it their way on TV (and let’s not forget all those feel good stories about Billy-Bob and what a hard time he/she had getting there and what a great person they are). Case in point, in gymnastics, each team spends time on each apparatus before moving on to the next. And it's possible that some girl will be on the balance beam while another is doing a floor routine (with music) while one is on the poma and another one is on the uneven bars. An Olympics gymnastics event is like a circus event with many things going on all at the same time. But NBC modifies this footage and shows each gymnast for each country (who they choose to cover) all on the same apparatus all at the same time starting from the bronze medalist all the way to the gold medalist. This is not how the competition is conducted, yet NBC feels the need to modify the footage to make their viewers think that hey this is the way the event was played out. Of course this way of covering the Olympics is not new. It’s the formula the American media has been using for years. I can’t speak for European Olympics TV coverage, but I can tell you that the CBC chooses to show live event coverage instead of this pre-canned sappy modified version NBC prefers. The live event coverage is where the drama, suspense and spontaneity comes from, shit we already know who won a given event before NBC even chooses to cover it. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

kelel01 1 #70 August 19, 2004 You would rather that they play it live, in one big clusterfuck, in the middle of the day while we're at work? Ohhhhhhhkaaaaaaaaaaaaaay . . . Anyway, several of the separate teams ARE on the same event at the same time, just so you know. When there's only 2-6 people from a country (team comp or all-around), they put 3 or more countries on each event if need be. There's no reason to have 24 groups of 2 moving around separately, so that each person has 6 events and 18 byes. I'll grant you the life stories being overly dramatic, but that's what they're there for. I mean, I'm sad to say that Natalie Coughlin's story was actually very interesting to me, and it made her race much more intense to watch. tigra 0 #72 August 19, 2004 What I think is kind of funny is that you can look up some results on the internet or hear them on the radio long before NBC airs the events. (Mens Gymnastics, for example) but they seem to be trying to hold back some of the others. (like the Women's Gymnastics and some but not all of the swimming events.) FlyingJ 0 #73 August 19, 2004 QuoteI'm just curious as to how all of you would improve the coverage of the Olympics. Kelly Overall I think they are great. The only thing I would change is some of the announcers. Al Trautwig is all over the place announcing (gymnastics this year, the Tour de France earlier in the summer) but he never seems to know much about what he is announcing. I understand why NBC has him there, because he is sitting there live asking the kind of questions of the other announcers that many people at home are probably asking. I think that is great in regard to at home viewers understanding what is happening, but I would much prefer if they had someone that knew what was going on simply do a running commentary explaining things rather than some guy sounding like he doesn't understand anything. Anyway, really not much of a complaint. I love watching everything!Killing threads since 2004.
