skymama 37 #27 August 17, 2004 He's gotten a Gold and Bronze in individual events and another bronze (?) in a relay so far. Do you have any idea of how hard just that is to do? He himself said in an interview last night that all he wanted was 1 Gold, everything else was just a great bonus after that. It was the media who started the whole thing about breaking Spitz's record. For a 19 year old kid, I think he's doing great! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
quade 4 #28 August 17, 2004 Quote Yeah, Phelps hasn't been a dissapointment, has he Wow that's -really- unfair. Coming into the Olympics, what did -he- promise us? Nothing. The ONLY reason he was being made out be the "star" of the Olympics is because of all the controversy surrounding the drug usage of the track and field guys. The media needed a hero and picked Phelps because he had the possibility of winning a lot of gold -- he's a swimmer and it's possible for them to enter a LOT of different competitions. So, they hype him to the hilt and when he doesn't quite live up to it, he becomes the goat? That sucks. BTW, I still think he has more Olympic medals than you or I ever will.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Brains 2 #29 August 17, 2004 QuoteYeah, Phelps hasn't been a dissapointment, has he Nope! He has four medals in four finals. Seems to me he is having a grand time. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Yeah, like they said last night . . . just look out for him in 2008, when he has more international competition experience. He's gonna kick some major ass (moreso than he already has)! He's gonna kick some major ass (moreso than he already has)! Yep, as long as he can stay healthy and injury free for the next 4 years, he should just keep improving. Most male swimmers tend to peak later than females, so he should still be in top form when he is 23.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
tunaplanet 0 #32 August 17, 2004 That's like saying the New England Patriots are doing good if they go 9-7 and squeak into the playoffs and get knocked out in the AFC Championship. That would be considered a huge failure for a team with that much talent. Phelps failed. Period. He showed up and choked. When it came crunch time he couldn't bring it home. tunaplanet 0 #33 August 17, 2004 QuoteYep, as long as he can stay healthy and injury free for the next 4 years .....And hope Ian Thorpe doesn't compete against him. He made Phelps look foolish. Thorpe is unbelievable. Forty-two
kelel01 1 #34 August 17, 2004 Winning an Olympic medal is not failing, even if it's *gasp* bronze. Oh, the horror of only getting a bronze medal in the Olympic Games. Oh, wait, he got a gold anyway . . . never mind. Kelly

Laughable isn't it. Sort of like this years dream "team" that got their ass handed to them. I can't imagine the pressure that guy had on him, there is was, only one that can win or loose, everyone watching and he pulls it off, winning 4 medals. That's a badass.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Phelps has done nothing but preform at a top level. He never promised anyone anything. He's gotten 4 medal on his own. Screw Thorpe, the man has much more competions under his belt. Maybe at this time in their swimming he's better. Who cares!! This 19 yo kids has done FAR MORE then you will EVER do in your entire life. skymama 37 #41 August 17, 2004 QuotePhelps failed. Period. He showed up and choked. When it came crunch time he couldn't bring it home. Do you know anything at all about competitive swimming? Phelps qualified in 6 events: 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly, 200m IM, 400m IM, and 200 backstroke. He is the most versitle swimmer in the world. At this level, most swimmers can only focus on one or two different strokes to stay at the top. He's competing in 3 strokes plus IM's plus relays. Ian Thorpe isn't as well rounded. Phelps competing in these different events are like a skydiver competing in RW, Freefly, Skysurfing and Freestyle all at the World Meet. In addition, Phelps decided to drop the 200 back so he could compete in his weakest event, the 200 free. I read in an interview that he decided to do that just because of the thrill of the competition. He didn't go into that event to win the gold, he just wanted to compete against Thorpe in Thorpe's strongest event. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
jakee 1,581 #42 August 17, 2004 QuotePhelps failed. Period. He showed up and choked. When it came crunch time he couldn't bring it home. If Phelps had gone into each of his events ranked No 1 in the world and with world championship gold in each hanging off his neck then you might come close to having a point. Skymama's right, the fact that he went up against Thorpe in one of Thorpe's strongest events is brilliant. He wanted to face up and see what he'd got. I think thats awesome.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
tunaplanet 0 #43 August 18, 2004 QuoteHe wanted to face up and see what he'd got. And he came out a loser. Is Phelps a great swimmer? Yes. Is he the best in the world? No. He may be the best in those who adore him but being a nice guy doesn't make you a great swimmer. Results do. He was outclassed by a better swimmer. He is not in the same category as Spitz, Thorpe and others. Maybe one day. Not today. Forty-two
