turtlespeed 226 #1 August 25, 2004 My daughter wants to learn how to pack - She is 11 years old. I have heard of others learning early. She is strong enough. Before, my attitude was no - not for a while - but I might have flip flopped. feedback? opinions?I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
cvfd1399 0 #2 August 25, 2004 I thought this was going to be about something else regarding dating...... I think it goes off of maturity level, and for who and what she will be packing.
jlmiracle 7 #3 August 25, 2004 As long as she is supervised, at least at first, I don't see any problem with it. She can come pack for me. JudyBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
turtlespeed 226 #4 August 25, 2004 My Canopy only at first. (You know - I almost put "Get your minds outta da gutter" at the top of the post - but thought - Nah - they will be mature enough - expecially since this is about my daughter.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

JohnnyD 0 #8 August 25, 2004 QuoteMy Canopy only at first. That is a great start and don't forget to pay her for her work. If she can understand the responsibility, I would assume she will find herself to be very busy in no time. I wouldn't have any problems with age in letting someone pack my main as long as I trusted them.
unformed 0 #9 August 25, 2004 You never specified what kind of packing. Anyways, never too young to start. This ad space for sale.
towerrat 0 #10 August 25, 2004 I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as she has a decent attention span. I would jump my kids pack job. Edit: would help build self confidencePlay stupid games, win stupid prizes!

Zenister 0 #12 August 25, 2004 i've seen some really young packers... i think the youngest that i've ever let pack for me was 15, but it is your life, risk it in any way you chose....____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Dougiefresh 0 #13 August 25, 2004 How does she handle frustration? At age 26 I still can't handle packing, it makes me want to light a match and... well... So if she is like me, which I imagine at that age she is, I would say wait a while. But WTF do I know....Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
ozthebum 0 #14 August 25, 2004 Hate to be the downer on this thread, but remember to think about how it'll affect her if she accidentally packs you a mal.
pilotdave 0 #15 August 25, 2004 I let an 8 year old "help" me pack one day. I'd set one brake and she'd set the other, then after putting the canopy on the ground, she'd roll on it to get the air out, then cock the pilot chute (which she needed some help with). I realized my closing loop really needed to be shortened when she was able to get it through all the grommets with only a little help. Then she helped fold and roll the pilot chute. I tore up my fingers learning to pack... if an 11 year old can do it, I'm impressed! Dave
Remster 30 #16 August 25, 2004 Seriously: will she be able to close the main tray with a loop that is short enough?Remster

upndownshop 0 #18 August 25, 2004 Quote My daughter wants to learn how to pack - She is 11 years old. I have heard of others learning early. She is strong enough. Hell yes let her pack!!! My brother and I were packing by the time we were six. That was the round days with two springloaded P|C's, 4 pin ripcords and pack opening bands. I think the only reason my parents had kids was for the packing. It will give and teach her responsibility and build her confidence. Just remember she might smack you!! Back then we didn't really have to worry about the openings, even with the old squares. But what the hell do I know, I haven't packed in three years and 1100 jumps since I returned and I still have zero cutaways, by the way what the hell is this pro packing??? Maybe I will learn some day? I say go for it, less work for you, its all good!
