SkyHigh04 0 #1 April 19, 2008 Well it's finally that time now that I've saved some money...AFF 1! I'm starting it tomorrow 4/20, so yes I'll be getting "high" on 4/20(in the good, 11k above the earth kind)...lol I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. The weather MIGHT get bad later in the day so if that happens, I'll only be doing the class and then jumping next weekend. Either way I'm anxious and excited to learn and have fun. I'll keep you guys updated as to how it's going. Any advice?"...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci

NWFlyer 2 #3 April 19, 2008 Relax, smile, have fun, ask good questions, and listen to your instructors. That's about the only advice you should take from anyone on here while you're still a student. diablopilot 2 #4 April 19, 2008 Don't puke on your instructors in the airplane, and make sure your shoe laces are not tied together. Other than that, have fun! ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Chubba 0 #6 April 19, 2008 Quote Don't puke on your instructors in the airplane That definitely wouldn't go down too well. I remember doing the practice climbouts in the Cessna 182 and the final command is "ARCH" as you let go. I swung my arms back and smacked the AFFI with my altimeter straight in the face. diablopilot 2 #7 April 20, 2008 A few hundred AFF jumps and you'd think I'd have learned by now. A few months ago I'm doing an AFP Level 1 with one of our pilots> He waives off, reaches pack, and pulls, punching me dead in the nose! Cut ahead to last month, I'm doing an AFP L1, and just barely duck the students punch again! One day I'll learn! ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

SkyHigh04 0 #9 April 20, 2008 Did all my AFF 1 training but no jump today because of the weather... it closed the DZ for the day. I learned a lot though and had fun practicing my PLFs and emergency procedures on the training rig. My jump is scheduled for Saturday 4/26 now, weather permitting. I'm going to be getting video done so I'll share it here on DZ.com with everyone. This is going to be a long week of anticipation but it's so worth it. SkyHigh04 0 #11 April 21, 2008 The way my instuctor put it is that we shouldn't be worrying about them at all because we each have our own job to do. I would worry about hitting them during deployment though because sometimes stuff happens....this one look like it hurt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_be7Rr-pUs I've been practicing my jump over and over in my head. I also practiced my arch standing up and on the ground. The emergency procedures were drilled into my head but I still go over that. I basically picture the jump from take off until landing in my head. Now I'm sure this has happened at least once because I saw one video on youtube...How many times do AFF students practice things on the ground, are a good student, but then once in freefall they just draw a blank and forget what they're supposed to be doing? I guess I could see that happening out of pure adrenaline, fear, anxiety, etc...but I know for me personally, on the tandems I did, I loved every minute of freefall and the canopy ride was just as awesome. The ONLY part I had ANY reservation was the time it took to get up to altitude because I could feel myself get very anxious and just wanting to get up and get out, safely of course. Let's see if I can get a 30 to 1 ratio this time (for every 30 reads, at least 1 person responds) lol "...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci

peregrinerose 0 #13 April 21, 2008 Relax You already have 3 jumps behind you... you know what it feels like, you know that it's windy and noisy, and you won't get that stomach through your ears falling sense... you're ahead of most first jump AFF students already. I know what you mean about the ride to altitude... I still get a little nervous every jump on the ride up, but as soon as that door opens, I'm a happy girl! SkyHigh04 0 #14 April 25, 2008 I think my jump might get rained out once again this weekend...I just got off the phone with Theresea and they're setting up the DZ so we just have to wait and see until tomorrow morning. The time when my jump is scheduled (according to weather.com) there isn't supposed to be any rain at that time. However, the winds are also supposed to be ENE 13mph which is too close to AFF restrictions I know this is expected during student status...Either way I'm still going to show up for the beer "...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci

If it makes you feel any better, I am a complete doofus on the ground, can't remember anything at all. Though once I'm in the air it all suddenly comes back to me AFF1 is a piece of cake, you will do fine
peregrinerose 0 #16 April 26, 2008 Woohooo!! Be there with beer! I'll be at the DZ around 430 pm, worst case scenario we can at least put faces to the names and have a drink to your eventual jump Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
SkyHigh04 0 #17 April 27, 2008 Weather prevented my jump once again...I still went to my DZOs house and dropped off a case of Sam Adams Summer Ale =) because my jump is now scheduled for tomorrow at noon. The weather forecasters around here pretty much have their heads up their a$$ because their predictions are right maybe half the time. Keeping my fingers crossed"...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci
peregrinerose 0 #18 April 27, 2008 Hmm, you must have just missed my husband then.. he was there til about 3 when he left to pick me up at work. Depending on the weather, we might be out there tomorrow. If your jump happens... good luck! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
SkyHigh04 0 #19 April 27, 2008 According to the DZO, if the jump happens, you're one of my AFF instructors "...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci
peregrinerose 0 #20 April 27, 2008 Woohoo!!! Although the weather looks like CRAP today though, so we may not bother driving out (it's almost a 2 hour drive for us). Bleh. Believe me, I want to jump just as badly as you do right now. Other than a recurrency tandem with my husband I haven't jumped since Feb. SkyHigh04 0 #21 April 27, 2008 You're right...just looked outside and it looks crappy once again. I did 3 tandems in March and the last one was on the 22nd (of March) so I guess I'm more current than you "...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci
peregrinerose 0 #22 April 27, 2008 You were likeable until you had to rub it in that you've jumped more recently than me Chad just talked to Marc, we'll be out next weekend, hope the weather's better! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
SkyHigh04 0 #23 May 24, 2008 I DID IT!!!!!! I COMPLETED MY FIRST AFF TODAY AND PASSED!!! I got video but it's still being edited so I'll post once it's done. We had a little bit of a sloppy exit and then once it came close to pull time, my one instructor wasn't sure if I was paying attention to my altimeter so right as she points for me to pull, I'm looking at my altimer and of course pulled right away. The canopy ride was a lot of fun and the landing was perfect and I could of walked it out but I PLFd =) I'm so excited that it finally happened and I can't wait for AFF 2 tomorrow!!"...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you long to return..." - Leonardo da Vinci
