Eloy vs. Collegates

Recommended Posts

This is my last year of elgability for Collegates. Here's the deal, though. I don't want to be on the 4-way team for A&M, so that leaves me with freeflying and sport acc. Sport acc is a fucking joke, last time I was there I turned it into a mini-swoop comp for shits and giggles. So that leaves freeflying. I don't have a FF teammate, so that leaves me with the possibility of showing up and finding someone to FF with.

Should I go to Lake Wales where its cold and rainy over x-mas or to Eloy where its warm and full of DZ.commers getting shitfaced?

(honestly if my fiance goes and competes I'll be there with her playing with the swoop pond, but I really think I'd rather go to Eloy then have to put up with the academy dickheads competing that get free training, free gear and free jumps).

Geeeez Dave. May not be a personal attack but don't you think that was a bit harsh?

Nope. I've had to work my ass off to get the jumps I have, the training I have and the ratings I have. All they have to do is be there. Sure they're going into the military and live at the academy. Who cares, I went through the Corps of Cadets at A&M, what many consider to be much harder and was going into the Marines (stupid MCL and ACL...fuckers).

Basically, I was very unimpressed by the academy cadets I've met over the years and very unimpressed with my tax payer money going to fund their team when I'm having to bust my ass. Its like skydiver welfare.

Well, you might go and compete anyway. My team Team Funnel finished ahead of the Golden Knights in 10-way at Nationals 2001. Did we expect to beat anyone? No. But we went and competed anyway. They got free jumps but I didn't think they were a-holes. I rather thought it was nice of them to come up and want to trade team shirts with us just because we got the God Frog award for having the team with the best attitude in competition. The Knights were the ones who passed that award on to us.

Why not just ignore what the others are doing and go compete doing what you want to do? Spirit of competition?

That would have been cool. All the academy types I tried to talk to at collegates a couple of years ago shrugged me off and gave me a serious elitest attitude.

The GKs, though, those guys are definately a class act. I'm still impressed with how they did business when they were at Aggieland for Bush's jumps. 100% a class act. I think those academy types could learn something from all of those enlisted guys!

I'm leaning towards that. Actually, I really wish there was a swoop comp in collegates that would be something to be excited about, but I doubt that'll ever happn. Too bad CReW isn't still apart of collegates as well.

I just have to find a FF team mate, then its on.;)

So what you are saying is that young men might take some time to learn how to be leaders and good will embasadors? We aren't born that way all the time? Hmmmm.... maybe they just need a chance to make some of those mistakes and learn from it.

Lead by example? Go compete and show them how it is to be humble and help out.

Nice. I walked into that one, didn't I?:$

Oh and damnit, I still consider myself to be a young man...24 isn't *that* old, even though my body feels like its.:P

Well, I still need a FF partner, so the search is on for a college student with a couple hundred jumps that FFs that's willing to FF at collegates and hook the piss out of his/her canopy scarying the classic acc folks.:P:P

FLorida is not such a miserable place in December/January. It's warmer than Arizona (especially at night), and it's not hte rainy season that time of year. Considering all that Lake Wales is going through right now, I can't wait to do some jumping there to help them get rolling again. I'm sure eloy is a blast over the holidays as well, but Florida is not such a bad place to be.

If you get *stuck* at collegiates, you can always check out a few other DZs. ZHills and the tunnel are within an hour and Sebastian/Deland/Space Center are within two hours. THe Hills has a rocking New Years eve party, and I'm sure the other places do as well, although I haven't checked those out. It's nice to be "home" for the holidays. :)

Either would be good. Collegiates are cool but (and I don't know if this has changed) when I was there, there weren't a lot of competitors with a lot of jumps. At least in freefly there weren't. I'd like to go back sometime and really compete with a hardcore team mate (last time it was more of fucking off), but I don't know when. Maybe next year....;)>:(

Dave, you may want to consider your words more carefully, because there ARE people who post on here who are or were members of said academy teams.

You seem like a nice guy, but I really don't appreciate being called a dickhead by anyone.

I don't even have one! :P

Oh my gosh!!! I hung out with those "dickheads" all week while I was there. After the competition was over, they were great in jumping with me and giving me tips and pointers. No, it's not just because I was a girl. They know that they are lucky in that one of their classes is about skydiving. But, after talking to them about what they go through for it, I decided that I was much luckier for going to Purdue and having to pay for most of my jumps.

Sheesh. They weren't dickheads at all. They were some of the nicest people I met at Collegiates.

Dude, you need to chill. You are still carrying around that ROTC v. Ringbanger chip.

As to Eloy. If your future wife is going to be in Florida, I'm thinking that's where you want to be, FF partner or not. Odds are, you might even get laid ;).

If you end up in AZ, though, I'll be happy to drink some of your Shiner!

This is about to be my first time being eligible for collegates, and if there's a way I can swing it, I might go.

I can't ff though. CAN'T. Period.

I'd be there pretty much for the Sport Accuracy, and maybe a pickup RW.

Well, unless collegiates is before you will have been in the sport for 5 years then you can still compete. If it is after and because you are 24 years of age as well as having over 1,000 jumps, you will be ineligible for the competition.

I am just saying this in case you didn't already know so maybe it will help you make up your mind.

PS. Are you a full time student (12 hours or more)? I thought you graduated.

You are only ineligible if you've been in the sport for more than 5 years, are over the age of 25, and have more than 1,000 jumps.

We tried to get the dzo of Skydive Indiana to compete since he was also a Purdue student. But, he met all three of those qualifications, so he couldn't compete.

Oh, It just says on USPA.org that the competitor cannot be more than 24 years of age at the time of competition.

I thought he fit into that because he is 24+, but I wasn't sure if he will have been in the sport for 5 years at the time of compettition.

I was just making sure that this was known so it could help him decide.

Clint
