a little car help...

Recommended Posts

hi to all that enjoy working on cars. I have a problem with mine and what im getting told at the shop dosnt really sond "on point" Heres the story my AC works great as long as Im going over 1500 RPM. if i drop below that it
just starts blowing warm air. Very annoying when sitting in traffic. Anyway what i just got told is that I may just need more freeon. They said I dont appear to have a leak but would have to add the freeon with dye in it to ensure i dont have a leak. This would not be covered under the warrenty because its maintaince. However I would think that if there is a leak it should be covered due to the AC being between the two bumpers... Anyway the explination of why the ac only works abover 1500 RPm was that My engine had to work the compressor harder. It was alwyas my understanding that no Freeon would mean No AC EVER. Well just basically asking some others opinions...

Thanks in advance

Hi, how's it going? What kind of car is it? Year/make/model? This info would be helpful but I'll give it a stab anyway. How did the mechanic determine it "may just need more freon"?? Did he hook up a set of gauges to check the high side/low side pressures? This will tell alot about what's going on with the system. If not, he's just guessing. Some newer vehicles have a low engine coolant (antifreeze) sensor which if it senses low coolant will shut down the ac system to keep the ac compressor from putting more of a load on the engine. But if it is low on refrigerant, then there has to be a small leak somewhere, refrigerant doesn't just disappear. Yes, the dye will show where the leak is if it is at a spot you can see when you open the hood, but if the evaporator is leaking or the leak is somewhere not in plain sight he'll have to use what's called a "sniffer" to find it. The answer of "my engine had to work the compressor harder" is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. I don't understand what he's trying to say. Who knows, maybe the guy was just trying to put it in laymans terms or something. And yes, NO freon (refrigerant) would mean no ac. If it were low on refrigerant it could still work, just not as efficiently & you should hear the compressor cycling on & off rapidly. Let me know how it goes, I hope I was able to help!! :)

Thanks for the info...

the Truck is a 02 Dodge Ram. I didnt see how it was checked but the mechanic said it didnt appear to have any leaks, but then wanted me to pay for the thinkg to test for leaks. hmmm... I was wondering if since it works great at high RPM if maybe there was just a belt loose somewhere that is slipping at the lower speeds. Possibile? Seeing as I know not much about cars (further than changing the oil and things of that nature) Its just a guess. I really need/want to learn all about the inner workings of a car Im just too damn lazy to do it. :)

it is most likely a bad a/c compressor. or a freon leak. more likely a freon leak. if the system is low on freon that IS NOT MAINTNACE. if it is low IT IS LEAKING. and a leak should be covered in the initial warranty. ive worked in a dealership for the past 12 years and the only time i run across this kind of shotgun diagnostics is when the car was given to one of the trainee's or newer techs. call the service manager and im sure he will have somone diagnose the problem correctly, UNDER WARRANTY. if the car still is under warranty.

if the belt was slipping, trust me you would hear it.

all a/c systems despite make and model of the car all work off the same theory's and principals. this should be very easy for an experianced technician to diagnose. within 1 hour of looking at the car.
