Any good speeding excuses?

Recommended Posts

I have a hearing to appeal a speeding ticket today. I was doing 74 in a 55 mph and got pulled over. I did it and was going to pay it, but several people said to appeal it, because it is worth the chance they might dismiss it. So does anyone have any good ideas of what I can say or any experiences where you got yourself out of paying a ticket?

Thanks in advance
Melissa

This kind of depends on how much your fine would be, and how many points you already have on your liscence, but...I wouldn't try to appeal, but plead guilty and then ask the judge that in lieu of the ticket/fine/points on your liscense if it would be possible for you to take a defensive driving course.

I received a ticket once that was going to cost me upwards of $350, so I asked the judge if there was anything that I could do to lower the fine and mentioned that I had a friend that had been ordered to take defensive driving.

She agreed, erased the ticket and I had to spend about 4 hours in a classroom watching movies, which cost me about $75. To top it off, I sent the "graduation" certificate to my insurance company and they gave me a discount for having taken defensive driving. In the end, I actually saved money because of the ticket.

or you received a phone call that you had to be on the sunset load...

That's so funny, because it is exactly why I was speeding that day  Usually my DZ is not open during the week but this particular week it was, so right after I got out of work, I figured that if I drove fast enough I could make the last load. I still ended up making it, which if I had known, I wouldn't have sped [:/]

The DZ owner gave me her "speeding" speech when I got there which went something like "You fall 120 mph when you get here, isn't that fast enough? Do you really need to speed on the way up?"

I'm amazed the judge didn't make you pay the $350 fine.

Most of the time, you still have to pay the fine.
They just give you the option to pay an additional fee to take the driving school so you don't get the ticket on your driving record.

The judge must have liked you!

In florida they have several 'ticket clinic' type law firms ...some available online. My last ticket was a few years ago. Fine was something like $250 if I paid it. Hired the clinic online, didn't have to go to appear in court. Had to pay $75 for the clinic, a similar amount for the ticket.

Adjudication withheld, no points, no traffic school, no record B| B| B|

Best of luck!

Just before I left Colorado, I was pulled over for speeding after leaving JumpinJen's place and no shit this statement worked:

"Oh no..I'm so sorry!...I was just looking for a Taco Bell!"

He gladly gave me directions to the nearest Taco Bell and sent me on my way...so, of course, I had to really go there:D

In a former life as an Airport Police Officer I was working radar when a vehicle comes zipping by far enough over the limit to stop. I pull in behind them (male driver, wife in front seat, college age daughter in rear seat) and turn on the lights. The driver and I make eye contact in the mirror, the wife is talking rather animated to him...he just keeps driving. I flash him with the spot light, bump the siren...he looks me in the eye in the mirror and keeps going. I think "OK, along with the speeding ticket he gets the failure to stop ticket" (much worse than the speeding ticket).

He pulls in front of the departure terminal and the wife and daughter bail and go inside. I ask him for the license and registration then ask if he knew I wanted him to stop to which he replied "Yes sir". When I asked him why he didn't stop he said, "Frankly officer, I'm more afraid of her (looks toward where his wife went) than I am of you."

All he got was the speeding ticket.

My cousin had a friend who was stopped for speeding in Florida. Knowing she would loose her license with one more ticket, she smiled and said, "Officer I know you stopped me because you want to sell me a ticket to the policemen's ball." Without thinking, the officer said, "Mam, I work for the highway patrol. We don't have balls." After realizing what he had said, he turned around, got into his patrol car and left.

ive gotten 2 tickets...each time I went to court and each time they were reduced...the first time the cop said he commended me for actually taking the time to show up in court....he reduced it to a "failure to wear a seatbelt" which was $30 and didn't even show up on my driving record...he never once i asked why i was going so fast.

The second time I wasnt asked why either, but it was right after i had broken my foot so I had hobbled in on crutches...I actually tripped and fell in the courtroom...i think she took pity on me and reduced the ticket hahaha.

I believe if the cop doesnt show up the ticket is dropped...or if a different cop sows up in his place you can easily argue it-my friend did that-she was pulled over on a highway -said her cruise was set to 70, but a car flew past her right before the cop pulled her over and maybe he got tht car instead of her-ticket got dropped....another friend said she left her curling iron on and was rushing to get home so she didnt burn down the house....and another said to the judge (who was female) that it was that time of the month and just HAD to get to a bathroom. "She was like "I tried explaining to it to him, but men just dont understand these things":D The judge dropped the ticket haha.

I have a cop friend and he said back when he was working the roads he only pulled over people who were really busting the speed limit. If he had to pull you over you were going to get a ticket. One time he pulled over a couple of girls and got out his ticket book and went through the whole license and registration thing and walked back to his car to call it in and start filling out the paperwork. But when he started trying to fill out the form the pen broke and wouldn't write. He fooled with it for a minute but couldn't get it to work, so he set about trying to find another pen in the car. He searched the whole car, including the trunk but couldn't find another pen. So he clipped the broken pen the girls license and registration and walked back up to her car. He handed her the pen and everything and just said, "It must be your lucky day." And then he got back in his car and drove off.

Many tickets are written for revenue not safety (example: A rural highway is posted at 65 MPH, except where it runs through incorporated land and drops to 45. The traffic conditions, visibility, etc. are identical on both stretches).

Such tickets can be plea-bargained to offenses with fewer or no points, although you're not going to get out of paying a fine (that's why you got the ticket).

I fought one once 40 in a 25 mph zone. It was a big speed trap and they were pulling over everyone.

I told the judge that I was moving with the flow of traffic, as shown by the fact they pulled over almost every car on the road. And said that if the intention was to get people to slow down on that stretch of road, it worked on me and I will obey the speed limit from now on no matter what traffic is doing. Then I said I don't mind paying the fine becaue I know I was wrong, but the insurance points would hurt me badly financially. He dropped it down to a charge that had a fine of about $80 and no points.
