JamesNahikian 0 #1 September 3, 2004 My TCP/IP evaporates following McAfee Firewall uninstall on an XP box despite many tens of hours futility, and even McAfee's senior management doesn't seem to know how to resolve this issue Messrs. Hodges and Samenuk included (of course I've been keeping the CEO and Ch. Bd. informed ). How have you eliminated these McAfee cooties? (the internet seems replete with unanswered cries for help given similar situations.) Were you able to strip away the McAfee LSP layer successfully? Or, did you concede and purchase new goods? What's your impression of McAfee 'technical assistance'? I want my TCP/IP service restored. Your experiences and, better yet, your expertise will be appreciated. D. Kennedy 0 #2 September 3, 2004 There isn't a chance in hell I'll ever purchase a single product from McAfee. They can't even get their free trialware to work. Honestly, if the shit I download fro free doesn't work, why the hell would I give them my money?witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
JamesNahikian 0 #3 September 3, 2004 I forgot to contribute McAfee's last-ditch guidance: QuoteDear Customer, Here are the steps on how to remove the LSP layer of McAfee Programs : Uninstalling Firewall's LSP Layer Copying the attached files to Disk 1. Right click on the attached files, and select save as. 2. Make sure that you have a floppy disk in the A: drive to save the file on. 3. In the save box that appears, select your A: drive to save the file to. 4. Click on the save button, and it will save the file to your floppy drive. Saving the files to the affected machine 1. Place the Floppy, with the files you've copied, in the computer that is having the problem. 2. Double click on the My Computer icon, and then on the A:\ Drive. 3. Right click on the file MCLSP.DLL, and select copy. 4. Next close out of the window, and then double click on the My Computer icon again. 5. Double click C: 6. Double click Windows (you might need to click show files.) 7. Double click System (you might need to click on show files again.) 8. Now you are in the system folder. Right-click on the white area inside the system folder and choose paste. 9. Answer yes to any questions to overwrite the existing file. 10. Repeat steps 3-9 for the INSTLSP.EXE file. Now you will be able to go into MS dos and uninstall the LSP layer. Removing the LSP 1. Click on the Start button. 2. Highlight Run. 3. Type in COMMAND and hit the OK button. A window will then appear with a black background. The last line of text in the window will look something like C:\Windows> (followed by a blinking cursor). 4. From the C:\windows directory type in CD SYSTEM 5. Now from the C:\windows\system directory type in REGSVR32 /U MCLSP.DLL 6. You will now get the message that the process succeeded. 7. Reboot and you should be able to connect to the internet. Uninstalling the LSP layer 2nd level Only do this if removal of LSP failed. Using the Instlsp.exe file 1. Click on the Start button. 2. Highlight Run. 3. Type in COMMAND and hit the OK button. A window will then appear with a black background. The last line of text in the window will look something like C:\Windows> (followed by a blinking cursor). 4. Navigate to the system directory by typing CD SYSTEM and enter. 5. From the c:windows\sytem prompt, type in INSTLSP -D (this translates out to be INSTLSP then a space -d) 6. Reboot the system and you should now be able to access the internet. Regards McAfee Technical Support This latest transaction follows multiple attempts at the usual remedies -- winsock restoration, tcip.inf file placement, selective os reinstalls etc. Naturally, McAfee's tech rep failed to attach the files referenced by his own e-mail. PhreeZone 20 #4 September 3, 2004 Which center are you talking to? They have a support office in Cali, England, India and I think they were talking about one in NY too. Ask them, if they say Cali or England stay on the line, otherwise ask if you can be transfered to England. They have a lot of developers there that can assist. I was part pf the cause for Service Pack 3 for their Webshield version 2.5 I might be able to run it up my corp support contract and get to tier 2 or 3 support for you if you need it. I've got Mcafee running on over 7300 desktops and servers and only ever had 3 issues that Support could'nt help me with. 2 of those were problems with the Backup software and thats just an issue that every AV product has, and the other one was an EPO issue that they ended up fixing in a hotfix about 4 months later anyways. http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/index.php Is staffed by a lot of Mcafee experts, including a few that are on the clock unoffically at NAI http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tvdug/ might also be a good resource.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

JamesNahikian 0 #6 September 3, 2004 Thank you, Phree, and everybody else who responded. My immediate approach is to go jumping and then reconnect with McAfee support a few days from now, assuming my blood pressure trends downwards. D.
