solving world problems

Recommended Posts

Ok, hurricanes start out in sub-Saharan Africa. Then they move across the Atlantic and pound the US/Caribbean area causing billions of $ in damage.

If you could eliminate 1/2 of them, or tone them down so much that they dissipated, it would be worth big bucks to the insurance companies.

The cause is heat. If you reduce the heat, less are formed. Solution - for $10 million, hire a bunch of African locals to plant date palms. Palms would absorb solar heat, less storms. Dates are a good agricultural trade product. With less hunger and unemployment, less tribal warfare.

Problems solved? Hurricanes, unemployment, hunger, and war. Insurance rates go down. Less damage to property.

I should be in charge of something.

Bill, you're a genius, you're rehired for whatever it was you wanted to do for my country.

You can have my job as gravity monitor at big ways. Just 'cos I'm a physicist I get the job every time!

John -

Hate to break this to you, but that's their way of saying "Stop bothering us" That's like parents telling the children to go to sleep or Santa won't come.
"Uhh.. yeah... go keep an eye on gravity... no no no, it's a very important function, people could get hurt if the gravitational force unexpectedly changed!"
:D
You physicists are so gullible sometimes....

You can mock, but without gravity your skydiving would suck big time.:P

Problem there. Sand has a high albedo; it absorbs little light and reflects most of it back into space. Date palm leaves have a low albedo; they absorb most of the light/heat energy that hits them. It seems cooler on the surface because it's shady and because the palms use water to cool themselves due to evaporation, but now you've created a warmer, wetter air mass above them. Warmer and wetter air = more bad weather.

You can see this when flying your canopy. Fly over a sandy lot, then fly over blacktop. The blacktop absorbs more heat, and you'll feel the rising hot air above them. You can see it out in the plains states as well - more clouds form over irrigated fields than over grassy plains.

Can't we just get that experimental stuff that absorbs moisture in the air, air lift a few million tons of it and drop it strategically on forming storms in the atlantic and dissipate them before they become unmanageable?

We could just reverse the spin of the earth. It would probably be cheaper. That would basically reverse the ocean currents driven by the Coriolis force, turn Florida into a Mexico-like dry climate, and give San Diego thunderstorms every day.

He's just concerned that if I find a solution to global warming, he'll be stuck with a hybrid car for no reason. ;) "Uh... yeah, I bought it because... oh, nevermind." :D

Also, if what BV says is true, the weather might provide enough wind for wind-powered generators. Free electricity, use the elec. to split seawater and produce hydrogen or de-salinate water.

The Africans could be driving their hydrogen-powered Humvees out to water their pollutionless golf courses.

I should email John Kerry right now. :)

You are talking about sponges. However, it is a matter of balance. There are already huge number of natural sponges on the bottom of the ocean. If we pull them up and wring them out, the water that is released would cause the ocean level to rise momentarily, causing coastal flooding.

After dropping the sponges on the hurricane, the hurricane would be absorbed and the sponges would return to the ocean floor.

You've got a good idea there. :)

:P High molecular weight hydrophilic polymers to be exact...but the EPA says they caused lung cancer in some animals. But it did work in field tests supposedly on smaller storms. Oh well.

Um no. It's called displacement. If you pull the sponges out, the water level will drop. When you squeeze the water out of the sponges, the level will still not be as high until you put the sponges back in.

Good thought tho. B|

But if I get a grant from the govt for $100 million, you'd help, wouldn't ya? ;) After all, they give money to study flatulence from cows butts, I think my idea deserves consideration. :)

Bill, you're fired again. I'm voting for Bill V. to assist me with world domination. You can be the Minister of Entertainment or something... :D

It's scarey that you know this. Have you been learning again? Haven't I told you that college is for drinking and chasing girls!! Quit educating yourself and becoming a mature, productive adult and get back to the debauchery dammit;);)

Precisely the reason that my animals are not allowed to play with hydrophilic polymers. For their own good. :) Sponges do not cause lung cancer and they are harder to inhale anyway.

I was disguising the title as Vice President.

No, you have to have some obscure title... sorry. I don't want people knowing you have a position in the government... might scare them off. :D
