TSA Surprise....

Recommended Posts

I'm actually surprised and impressed by the TSA agents in Milwaukee. :o Never thought I'd say that!!!

At the airport 2 hours early for my NYC trip, because I'm bringing my rig with me. Fully expect a long drawn out process getting through since I have weights in my checked luggage and I'm carrying my rig on.

Hand over my luggage to the TSA agent to get checked - nope...no issues. :o Ok...that was easy but for my rig...there's going to be a delay. Get up to the agent and hand them my ticket and ID and sure enough...I'm picked for "special" screening. :S Figures!!! Walk through...put everything up and walk through...sure enough...they've gotta check some of my carry on luggage - but it's not my rig. I forgot a pair of small scissors in one of my bags and they took it. Looked at my rig in the machine, and I mentioned that it's a rig and they just waive it through. Not only have they actually FINALLY received training on what a rig is, one of the guys was in the military and used to jump rounds. B| So...grab my rig and off I go.

Now...hopefully the weather cooperates and I get to jump!!!! :)

I havent had any problems, ever!

Ive done alot of traveling since sept. 11th I used to check my rig (when I went from korea to oz) but when I got back to the states and heard the horror stories of pinholes thru reserves etc, I stopped.

the only problem ( if one would bother to call it that)
is that I had locks on one of my pieces of luggage! I simply unlocked it and VOILA! no more problem

I had problems once when I was flying home from VA. They had to go through my gear bag and I had to explain everything to them. In 1999 I missed my flight from Miami to Texas because they had a problem with my rig. Only once when I flew from Tampa to VA was it all ok. The screeners had questions, but more of the whuffo type stuff. They were very interested in my gear, as far as how it worked and where I jump blah blah blah.

Hopefully with Cora's experience with TSA... only better things to come!! :)

The best one I ever had was when I put my rig (in a carry on suitcase) through the scanner. The person on the other side looks up and says - "Is this a parachute system?". "Yes" I say, to which they reply "Is there a cypres in this system?". "Yes" I reply. "Thanks have a good day" they say.

That right there is testiment to the USPA and the TSA's education program (this was also outta Providence Rhode Island).

Lately I've had ZERO problems traveling with a rig.

Thanks all for making it possible.

Hey, JT!

My experiences with TSA have been hit or miss - and most of my traveling with my rig has been done since Sep. 11th. There has been a lot of variation with the way TSA has handled me carrying my rig on, and this is the pre-second time that it was sooo smooth dealing with my rig. So...they get a kuddos from me. Hopefully, this experience is just the way the rest of my traveling with go from now on. :)

Travelling to Rantoul, I only had problems with my weights. The weights were little black spots on the screen. Once I showed them to them, it was ok.

Weights? You? :o:o

For some reason the screeners always want to examine my shoes; never had a problem with my rig.

I use them when my svelte self is in the base. ;) I didn't need them at Rantoul, I'd just left them in my gear bag with all the rest of the stuff.

Your shoes are a WMD? It's the socks probably.

same here... the only time i was really even questioned about my rig was when one of the supervisors asked if i had time so she could use it to train her new hires

other than that they always seem interested in my vans more than anything else....

As long as the screener doesn't grab the rig by that conveniently located silver handle (as I read happened on another thread):D:D:D

Tie your cheststrap around it in a way that you cant put on the rig without untieing it. Or use a contrasting pull up, and make sure not to make an ass of yourself and forget to remove it when you gear up!
