Dune has always been one of my favorite series and the original movie is still in my top 5.:)
The remake and Children of Dune were quite nicely done, I thought.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see it's path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I really really have to disagree, the movies are great eye candy and a good intro perhaps, but you really really miss the deeper insight and meaning from the book in the visual interpretations thus far.... honestly imho it would take a 20 hour series to really reflect the true spirit of the books, and who is going to pay for (and sit through) that??

There is a LOT on those DVD's and without the incessant commercials that Sci-fi throws at you are very cohereant. I thought they were far more true to the books than the old one... which if you had never read the books in the first place... left you wondering WTF.... as did some of the people who never read them....but have watched the movie with me. The Familial intrigue.. the underlying religeon and ethos of the Fremen based on thier life in a harsh environment. The excess of the ruling families is there as is the Atredies willingness to embrace the environment and become a part of the whole to become more attuned to thier new world and gain an understanding of the true power of Dune.

i'll have to check the DVD's then.. its not like i dont have the time atm......

"God created Arrakis to test the faithful..."

imho a great deal of Herbert's intentions and perceptions on the nature of human development and the various paths (pure scientific, technical vs 'natural' conscious, designed evolution) to reach it have been lost in the visual representations so far...

there is a larger picture....

I am in the midst of re-reading the series. Dune, Children of Dune, God Emporer of Dune (I'm nearly done with this one), Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune.

And then there are the prequels: House Atreides, House Corrino, House Harkonnen, and Butlerian Jihad. Those are interesting, but not quite what Frank Herbert had in mind, I don't think. The Jr. wrote them with someone else.

But all in all, a fascinating look at societies, and how religion plays within them. How resources structure and de-structure societies, and how interaction and politics work. The story can be seen as an allegorical comparison to our current world's dependence on non-renewable energy sources, use of computers (thinking machines), and a dominant religion in power who moves behind the scenes, manipulating various body politics to their own ends.

Now, I'm not saying that's true, but it's interesting to have read this series in my teens, with the whole fantasy genre and idealism of youth, and then re-read them throughout my adulthood. It's really rather interesting.

But I'm glad you liked the movies, Wingi. If you'd read the book, you'd find a depth, as Zen stated, that is impossible to come to from the films.

but based off many of the notes, and conversations with his father about the background to the stories... IMO the prequels may not be as if Frank had written them, but they are very close to the intent of the whole epic...

sometimes i think people tend to focus on their personal 'relationship' to the characters in a story and not to the larger themes... particularly in epic works such as Dune......

and the latest prequels... The Machine Crusade and the Battle of Corrin.

yup... I'm a Dune fan :$

The best part is that scuttlebutt has it that Brian Herbert is working on 'Dune 7' - the sequel to Chapterhouse Dune resolving the Honered Matres / Reverend Mother / Others mystery. Apparently it's based on notes that Frank Herbert wrote before he died.

The original series of books are great, but get more self indulgent the later they get IMO - God Emperor of Dune was really hard work... took a few reads till I got into it, but now it's one of my favourites.
The prequels are good but a little thin - they lack the complexuity and depth of the original series.

All the movies are cool, both the new set and David Lynchs' interpretation...

I, too, sat through the entire set of "new" DVD's in one sitting after I got them. I had no idea that "Children" was going to last as long as it did, but they were fascinating disks. I never read the books as a youngster as I was far too busy racing dirtbikes and riding skateboards. Since the weather is so shitty today I may just watch them again.

Sorry to imply that they weren't. Indeed, they are, and fit very nicely in to the series.

I didn't know those two were out. I feel the need to hit the bookstore today;).

I would love to read #7, too. That would be really interesting.

Chuck, glad you liked the film.

Dune...a fascinating story all the way 'round!

OK, so I have the OLD(sting) DUNE already and I couldn't sit through Children on SCI Fi as it just didn't interest me at the time. I was in the PX and by chance came across the newer DUNE 3 DVD directors cut set for $19 so I picked it up. Is Children on DVD as well? I couldn't find it but if I do I just might pick it up.

OK, I am watching the newer DUNE and I must say it looks absolutely brilliant in full screen on my 50" LCD HDTV, the graphics are superb as is the sound track. My only gripe is the wardrobe. Apparently they spent all the money on computer animation becasue the casts clothes looks like something out of a bad midevil movie. At least in the old DUNE their still suits actually looked like they might be functional as well as practical. The story does seem to flow better in the new one and abscence of the whispered voices(inner monologues) is fine by me. So far, I am enjoying it.

Yeppers....

I went to the bookstore. And came home with many books, including Heretics of Dune (replacement copy), The Machine Crusade, and Battle of Corrin.

I do have a business trip coming up...OTOH, I also have time to do some reading. I've been spending too much time working lately. LOL!!!

Yes, yes indeed...very, very cool. I enjoyed it immensely. It's set a very high bar in miniseries production, imho.

There's so much about it to like. First off is the production values --

What I really liked were the vast painted backdrops that gave the scenes both a traditional theatrical look and an otherwordly quality at the same time. When looking at them and seeing the characters in the foreground, you got a feeling that this was a real place, but not quite a real place, and possessing an almost dreamlike quality that made you want to believeB|.

CGI was put to good use, and was fortunately not over-used. Hats off to the folks controlling the special effects, using them to tell part of the story, rather than trying to overwhelm the story with eye-candy. And those sandworms! I would like to have a surround system with lots of bass when they attacked. Even so, they were very well rendered.

And you can't go wrong by having Vittorio Storraro as your DP...B|

The costumes were well-done, though some were a bit over the top in the case of Irulan's butterfly headdress and the mad-pizza-chef hats of the Sardaukar .:D I thought Gurney Halleck's steel gorget was a marvelous bit of kit. And what a great character!

The Atriedes uniforms looked good. The costumes and lighting of the Harkonnens made an excellent contrast that implied a hard-edged malevolence which was understated by the use of sinister colors, shapes, and lighting.

The pacing was good. It unfolded neatly, with enough intrigue to keep the viewer's attention. All the characters had a chance to become established and developed because of the sheer length of it. It all paid off, because we see all the pieces set into motion - the Spacing Guild, the Harkonnens, the Corrinos, smugglers, soldiers, and other players major and minor; and of course, the Atriedes: The ageless story of a boy becoming a man and finding his destiny has never been writ larger or more powerfully. I get chills up my spine watching Paul raise his ringed fist and saying "I am your Duke!", and the Fremen chanting his names...whoa...:o

There were lots of excellent scenes that were very well acted. One got a sense of all the layers - the plots, conspiracies, and underneath it all, the Bene Gesserit initiative to breed a super-being.

There were also other subtle bits of neatness that gave it a real finished look - the Fremen hand and body language, such as the greeting gesture with the hands placed one over the other and spread apart - that really looked authentic, as though it was something an alien desert people would actually do.

Finally, there was the casting. I thought all the principals were well-chosen. Even supporting characters, like the Fremen housekeepers, looked great.

According to the documentary in the 1st DVD set, Irulan Corrino was given a much larger role to help tie it all together. I didn't realize it at the time, but now it makes sense to me.

"Dune" was a towering masterpiece of fiction, and a triumph of imagination and the blending of contemporary themes with a far-flung future. I know of nothing like it except "The Lord of the Rings".

I was fortunate to meet and speak with Frank Herbert in 1984 at Tacoma Community College. People attending his lecture actually booed when the David Lynch movie was mentioned...:D...Herbert said that a miniseries was being planned, and people applauded.:D

I'm only sorry he wasn't here to see it. He died of a lung clot in 1986, poor devil. [:/]
