Would you watch it?

Fuckin A. They wanted video of ME FEMURING IN.. Laughing all the way.(to the hospital) B|

Well, yeah, getting video of people who have busted themselves up is par for the course. At our DZ we also get video of the unbroken ones doing exits out the door of the ambulance, more footage of broken person in hospital and generally even more footage of visitors having wheelchair races, etc in the hospital corridors. It all goes on the end-of-year carnage tape.

We wouldn't put a bounce on the bloopers video though.

"If it was on the TV I probably wouldn't avert my eyes."

At this point, I am one of the lucky ones: I have never lost a friend to skydiving. In fact, I have never lost a friend to death, that I know of (allowing for people with whom I've lost touch).

I know that I know people who have lost friends, even seen them die. But fortunately, not me, not yet, anyway. And I'm in no rush to see it, even if it's a stranger on a video. That's not a great fascination for me, and in fact, the further I can be from the notion of it happening, the happier I am.

Skydiving is about living to skydive again.

no, and there is no utility to see it IMO... Nothing to learn from it, except "wear a parachute when exiting a plane in flight".
A collision, low turn etc can be instructive. I have seen the video of the thailand incident this year... Wouldn't want to see it again.

Nice post dude. I completely agree, especially since i lost two friends to the sport recently. I've absolutely no desire to put myself or others through that kind of anguish and heartbreak, hearing the news of their deaths was bad enough, i can't imagine watching it. Nuff said.

I think a better question would be 'If you bounced, would you want others to watch the video?'

Personally, I would not. Certain images are seared in your head forever. I would think that something like this would be one of them.

It would kill me (though I'd already be dead, of course) if my friends/family saw that kind of video of me. I want them to remember my warped sense of humor, my grin, and my love of life, not have that tarnished by seeing me bounce.

Some things are better left unseen. I entered this sport knowing what it can do, my imagination is enough to keep me alert and safe.

A rehash of the videographer sans parachute in the Incidents forum made me wonder this.

Would you watch a bounce video? I don't mean in an official capacity but purely out of interest/curiosity/voyeurism?

Human nature being what it is, I've watched them, and I would again. It's partly to learn from them, and party that same thing that makes rubbernecking car crashes so appealing.

If you want to see some, and a lot of other sick stuff, go to http://www.ogrish.com It's not for the faint of heart though.

I've seen enough of them in real life without actually going and searching them out though.

I would watch them:SSame reason I watched the Beheading Video. It made me sick to my stomach and actually wished I hadn't seen it but it also made me very angry and I got to know what we are dealing with in the world today so I am grateful I did watch it.

I would expect the same thing watching a bounce vid. I would probably wish I hadn't seen it but I would be grateful that I had as it would burn forever in my mind what we as skydivers are facing each time we leave a plane if we forget that gravity is our enemy and it wants and will kill us if we let our guard down.

So yes I would watch.....

I was about to reply to the incident forum but this is a better place for it.

If I go in and it's on Video, you all have my permission to watch it as many times as you see fit. All I ask is don't sell it for profit, or at all for that matter.

I've seen plenty of carnage footage, and watched the real thing in person. Sucked. If a person really wants to satisfy their curiosity, then go for it. I had a friend go in attempting something that was not doable. Until I saw the video, it was pretty tough to accept he just plain ole put himself in an unsurvivable position. Stuff like that can be quite an eye opener. In some sports, I recommend seeing it before you partake.

Carnage sucks but I do agree with ghdiver completely. If it's there, I'll watch it but won't go searching for it.

i don't like watching carnage for entertainment, and i would learn enough from someone telling me what they did that caused the problem. guess i just haven't numbed myself to it. i refuse to watch real tv, or any of these sports disaster shows.. i haven't seen anyone go in, but watched what could have been one last weekend.

I'm with hookitt. Although I wouldn't enjoy it, I guess watching this kind of video can be a cold bucket of water in the face to us.

We enjoy our sport, and we accept the risks. I think that from time to time, I think we need to be reminded of the risks; it helps us keep our "danger-meters" properly calibrated as we make our day-to-day skydiving decisions. Do I jump in high winds? Is today the day to downsize? Am I ready for that bigway? Hey, I lost a contact on the way to the DZ, do you think it's still ok to jump?

Maybe the answer is yes. Maybe the answer is no. Being fully aware (and occasionally reminded) of the gravity of our decisions may not be so bad for us once in a while.

I don't really know. Before, I probably would have said yes; so long as I couldn't see the persons face or if I didn't know them or if I could avoid viewing the actual end of a persons life.
However, now, having actually watched as someone bounced below me; while I was under my parachute - I hope to never ever ever see that again; not in reality, video or dreams. Currently I can't even watch some people land.

Sorry Eric, but you're right. I didn't mean it funny at all. After watching someone spiral down & bounce about 20 feet, I can't watch anyone doing more than a 90degree turn less than 100 ft above the ground. When I'm under canopy I watch others around me, but not when they're below me - don't want to risk viewing that ever again.

I won't watch Peter till he's bout 20 ft off the ground & that's just to make sure I won't have to take care of his crazy-learning-to-hook-turn-ass. I don't watch others till they're actually swooping the grass.

I love this sport & know I'll prob see another insident, but not if I can help it. I'm basically holding on to jumping w/ every effort available to me.

This is my fear in this sport. I am not so much scared of myself going in, but if I ever witness someone else's last day, that might be too much for me. I hope and pray that if I ever do, that I don't know that person. Cuz if it is someone I know, I don't know if I could continue to jump.

I've never seen anybody die. The closest thing is when my father got in a very bad plane crash. He was very, very badly injured. I don't want to see something like that again. [:/]

Maybe - occasionaly there are things on the video that might help you with your own personal safety. Also it is another means of reminding ourselves of our own mortatility and it can help change our mindset to keep us safer.

It also would depend on who went in and the circumstances that led to it. Generally speaking I would not say that I would be in a hurry to see the video - I have seen 2 in person close up - as well as some vid - I don't need to see more.

I think that some jumpers should see this sort of thing, at 100 jumps I was invulnerable and could walk on water - now I realise how much I was pushing it with skills I did not have.

Safety comes down to:
Experience
Planning
Thinking
Skill
and sometimes just plain luck. Seeing things like this remind us that sometimes that sometimes all of these are not enough - be safe - don't be the video your friends see.

When I "rubberneck" a car crash, I don't slow down from my standard 70mph the way the idiots always do (which forces me to do it nevertheless). I can't understand how an accident -- even on the other side of the road, much less on the shoulder of our side -- causes people to slow to a stop on an interstate.

The only reason I am ever looking is to see if the person who was idiot enough to fuck up on a big straight stretch of highway bad enough to wreck (probably because (s)he was reading, jabbering on a cellular phone, putting on makeup, or something stupid like that) ate pavement or not. I'm not very forgiving of highway stupidity, and usually the only reason you see wrecks being rubbernecked on a highway is because someone was a goddamned fuckup.

I know you didn't mean that to be funny but I find it hilarious :D

I saw some people a few weeks ago, landing just after I did, only a few yards away, and even though I know they have more jumps than I do, and are better freeflyers than I am, and fly higher loaded, elliptical canopies (I fly a Lotus 170 at 1.12: 1) I watched these two landings and thought, "MAN that was crappy!" I mean, guys with experience flaring too high like it was their 3rd AFF level or something. One of them came in and almost trod right across my friend's canopy as it lay there deflated. (He came in through the 20 foot space between my friend and his own jump partner.)

Now, maybe I am a bit blessed because I had flight training well before I ever skydived, and I have a nice smooth flare and good judgment and perception about when and where to do it (I haven't stumbled a landing in probably about 90 jumps). But that makes me really edgy when I see others come in, flare to high, and I half expect to hear a sick *snap* when they hit grass. I am lucky to have never witnessed any severe injury or death, and I hope I have some sort of aura around me that keeps me and those around me safe in that respect. I'd love to go an entire skydiving career (life) never having anyone I know and anyone near me get hurt. But geez, some people really should know how to land a parachute by now, and don't. [:/]
