Viking 0 #1 September 8, 2004 I'm thinking about becoming an X-Ray Tech or MRI Tech. Its gonna mean atleast 2 more years of school but atleast I'll have a solid goal in mind. Anyone out there already in this field? If so please chime in. I read that 'solid gold mine'. And that's true too. I have a friend that is an x-ray tech and has his choice of traveling all over the country b/c this field is in such high demand and he makes freakin BIG BUCKS!!!!! Good luck!!! I think it's a great idea. I like coconuts. You can break them open and they smell like ladies lying in the sun!
Byron03 0 #5 September 8, 2004 Both my parents started out as X-ray techs. My Dad has since worked in Special Procedures, CT, and MRI departments. It definitely is an in demand job, and a great way to make decent money. You will get to work with interesting people (and by 'interesting people', I mean sick people). Hopefully you don't get grossed out too easily. As a student, or a low seniority tech you will have to do almost every procedure there is, their not all just taking x-rays of broken arms and legs, and doing Mamograms is not just taking pictures of boobies. Keep in mind that this is an outsider's view (I've worked in the Radiology Dept of a hospital, but only for a year or two). Overall it is a pretty cool field. It is always changing, so you can get training and move on to the newer technology as it is developed. And it is in demand all over the country. peregrinerose 0 #6 September 8, 2004 I don't know crap about being an MRI or X-Ray tech, but have had plenty of both. Definitely an in demand field. Just be nice to your patients. We don't like being there any more than you like having to go to work every day. A really cranky tech makes laying still for that long in an MRI tough. miked10270 0 #8 September 8, 2004 Remember that Diagnostic or Theraputic Radiography is a very equipment intensive profession. Physiotherapy is far less equipment intensive (at least in terms of equipment cost). This allows you far greater flexibility in how you work. For example, a friend of mine works as a physioterrorist in the states. One year she moved out of hospital and travelled around the state, 6 days a weekgiving physio to folk out in the boonies. After a bit more than a year doing this, she'd wrecked her car but was able to buy a new one... AND A HOUSE!!! She was able to carry a weeks supply of physio kit in the boot of her car. By comparison, I doubt a basic X-Ray room would leave you much change out of $200,000, so you're pretty much stuck in a hospital & salaried environment. Mike. And we used to have a real problem with fingers and stuff falling off... but then they invented glue. Seriously, any radiographer's personal dosage is very closely monitored. In 6 years I NEVER got above background level. Since then, 4 kids leaves me thinking it still works. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. skydiver30960 0 #12 September 8, 2004 Right now, and if you ask me for as far into the future as one can reasonably consider, there aren't many health care professions you could go wrong with. Reasons: 1.) More people than ever before means more people needed to take care of them; 2.) "The graying of America" i.e. the Baby Boomers are reaching/passing middle age; 3.) Americans, as a whole, just aren't taking as good a care of themselves as they used to. This is a statement loaded with opinion, but when one out of three people in the US is clinically obese (not just a little heavy, or too heavy for their height)... 4.) We're living longer than ever before, but our bodies become more and more maintenance-intensive as we push the age envelope. I'm an engineer by college education, but have started taking an EMT course because I haven't been able to find a good job since I got laid off in January (yeah, ok, so I've only really been looking for the past few months). I'm really enjoying it and hope to use it as a litmus test for working in trauma environments, which I (in my limited experience so far) really expect I'll enjoy. If I do like it as much as I have so far I'll keep on down this road toward EMT-P ALS or go back to school to be an RN or whatever. Yep, health care is where it's at. Now, bend over and try to relax (applying KY to latex gloved-fingers) this may feel a little strange... Elvisio "crash cart" Rodriguez

Anyone out there already in this field? If so please chime in. I'm an RN and have no direct experience in radiology, but after working in hospitals for 25 years, I don't think you'll have much trouble finding a job but are you ready for shift work along with night and weekend call? I have only worked nights throughout my career (many reasons) so the shift work is my norm. I have always avoided any job that required 'on call' times. When my shifts are over, I want my time to be mine. Damn near every radiology job I've seen requires call time. If stunning job availability appeals to you, as an LPN or RN, you can hit virtually any city in the country in the morning, have a job before lunch. Nurses also make $10-25/hr more. On the down side, nurses deal with the ...messier side of health care ;). Good Luck, Michael
Viking 0 #15 September 8, 2004 I can't say that nothing will gross me out but I'v spent the last 4 years taking care of my grandparents. Six months of that was being an in home nurse pretty much to my 98 year old grandpa. every day helping him get to the tiolet and such. I'm still taking care of my grandma with the help of mom and a little assistance from my brother. My mom thinks I'd make a great nurse b/c of all this but i don't think so b/c i hate needles and it would take alot for me to stab someone with one of those fuckin things. On top of that, i like being in the back of things not up front dealing with the crazy people (to much like being a salesman trying to make everyone happy) As for Shifts VS On Call I'd prefer shifts for the same reasons you have stated. Allows for more jumping. Speaking of which how to hospitals react when they find out that you skydive? Well, Ive worker every ER/ICU in south Florida over the past 20 something years, so I'm fairly well known and quite a few people Ive worked with over the years know I skydive. Other than that, I don't mention it much. Pretty much everyone that took a tandem considers themselves a skydiver, so when mentioned, it's no big deal.
