Ok, I'm a wimp. A tornado just touched down at McCain, NC. About 10 miles from Raeford DZ, which makes it 9 miles from my house. Trouble is, I work in McCain. The largest and only employer in McCain aside from one gas station, a few small churches and a motorcycle junk yard is NC Dept. of Corrections. I hope all my guys are ok there!

BTW, I gave Tony some cash for the visors...tried to give him more but he literally threw it at me.

Yep! Thanks! Forgot all about it. It will pay for "date night" this Wednesday if we can get out.

We got lucky here. Some trees got trashed but no property damage at my place. Just got the internet cable back (Adelphia lost the backbone). There are a lot of people without power in Palm Beach County. I went to the very dark office today in Boca and those old people are scary -- they think stop lights being out means ignore them!! :S
The courthouse and schools in Palm Beach County are closed for the rest of the week.

You are so lucky. I had more damage here than you did. This storm has one hell or a long arm.

Be careful Kate and stay home if you are advised to. From one wimp to another, it just ain't worth it to be out unless you absolutely have to. Our schools are closed again tomorrow so we'll wait and see. At least my power is back on.

We are still getting a lot of flooding around here. All the water from east of Tampa is flowing into the more urban areas.

When I drive home, I take a 2-lane road with swampy areas on both sides. In 4 different places, there was 4-6 inches of water flowing across the road for 100 yards. At the last one, the water was 3-4 inches deep, a small fish (bream) was swimming across the road ahead of my car.

I stopped and let him finish crossing. If you are a fish on a road, your life is tough enough without dodging my wheels. :D

This morning it took an extra 45 minutes to get to work because a nearby subdivision was flooded. They re-routed all the traffic down my road to work.

Have most or many of the areas without power started to come back on? Is it going to take weeks and weeks again? Our thoughts have been with you all.

Any word on which if any of the DZ's are operating or trying to get operational very soon? Sounded like most of the airplanes had been flown safely away but with limited news on damage and flooding it seems uncertain about when they can even open again.

Then there is also that monster IVAN looming in the distance, thoughts and prayers with everyone that it isn't a deja vu for you all.

Take Care,
Frank

My roommate was visiting his parents (20 miles north of us) last night. Their power just returned last night. It has been out since Saturday.

Everyone around me has power, but the flooding still makes it difficult to go a lot of places. It is not just rural areas. Some of the more expensive subdivisions in Tampa impassable roads.

I was surprised to read that the St. John's flooding certain areas is actually going to be worse now than it was during the storm. I guess it takes awhile for it to catch up or something.

A while ago, I had a job running pumps that filled a power plant cooling reservoir. We monitored the rain cycle and river level to determine the volume of water that we could pump.

Generally, it takes several good rains to saturate the ground. After that, everything is runoff and ends up in streams. It takes 24 hours for the runoff to impact the stream depth. If it was way upstream, 48 hours or more.

There is probably a lot of tributaries to the St. Johns that are still emptying into it. Some of those streams were already full and couldn't drain the surrounding land earlier.

We pumped 100,000 gallons/minute out of a 16 ft deep stream and didn't drop the level 4 inches. This was a stream that you could jump across in the dry season.

Well, the St. John's is a river for a reason. All the flooding around it will drain into the St. John's raising it even higher. Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the St. John's runs upstream. Considering where you are in relation to where the majority of the storm hit, I would assume you have a lot of water coming your way. But then again, what the hell do I know?:P

BTW, Frances will be bearing down on New England over the next couple of days bringing heavy downpours. I know it's not a hurricane anymore, but I felt so left out.;)

Would you mind, Chris, explaining how this river, hell, any river can run upstream?

Unless, or course, you meant something else...
