miked10270 0 #1 September 10, 2004 Serious post! My daughter Lauren (9) has a "Russian" story to do. She's a bit lost on the patryonomics & matrynonmics for the middle names. Is it boys=Patrynomic & girl=matryonomic? Is it boys & girls= patryonmoic? If it's a single parent, does that change it? If there's ANY Russians out there, PLEASE let me know. At the moment I'm sitting with her story on "word" going AAAAAAaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhhhh................ Thanks in advance.... (and expect regular bumps over the weekend 'til it's answered!!!! Mike. tunaplanet 0 #4 September 10, 2004 I speak Russian fluently. I know basic history, traditions, geography and such. Not sure how much help I would be to you. Forty-two
miked10270 0 #5 September 10, 2004 I'm not wanting to go "too" deep, just enough to tidy a 9-10 year old's essay. My Russian's not bad, but stuff like "ñâåòëûå ïàíöûðü è ïåõîòà" isn't all that relevant. I wasn't sure of the patrynomic / matrynomic middle name thing. THAT doesn't go much forther that "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich". Any help's appreciated Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. freeflir29 0 #6 September 10, 2004 My Russian is DEPLORABLE. Only know a few phrases. However.....it was enough to impress a HOT flight attendant the other day. She brought me a drink and I said "Spasiba......Vi gavaritte Ruseyee?" Of course the conversation continued mostly in English after that. Wow....she was one of those HOT blonde Russian girls. With nipples that showed through her FA uniform AND the sweater she had over it. I damn near made an extended trip to the Lav on that flight.

freeflir29 0 #8 September 11, 2004 Ivan that's nothing. The other FA on the flight was an American girl. Also a HOT blonde. (OK...so this was one WEIRD happenstance! 2 Hot FA's on 1 Northwest flight. Ya know...Northwest.....usually known for having the oldest planes and the oldest FA's) I got off that plane and told my partner..."Ya know....I don't think I have EVER wanted to have a 3 some with two FA's more in my life." His response...."Yep....."

prepheckt 0 #10 September 11, 2004 My Russian is rusty and rather at an elementary leve, which is something I am going to rectify quite soon, but what I know, both boys and girls have a patronymic. The rules for this "middle name" are simple. 1. Use the father's name (obviously). 2 Boys put -ovich at the end of their father's name. Girls use -ova So for example if you have a guy named Ivan Markov and he has a son Yuri and a daughter Katerina their full names would be 1. Yuri Ivanovich Markov 2. Katerina Ivanova Markov. Hope that helps. Dasvidanya tovarich."Dancing Argentine Tango is like doing calculus with your feet." -9 toes

captain1 0 #12 September 11, 2004 You're asking Yanks/Rebels that kind of question? Hell, you live a lot closer to Russia than we Americans do. I take it as patronymic meaning "Of, relating to, or derived from the name of one's father or a parental ancestor." Enlighten me on middle names with all due seriousness. I don't speak Russian but like WW11 they will be our allies again due to terrorism.
Jumpervint 0 #13 September 11, 2004 Except we would keep little Katerina a true female and give her a feminine last name as well. -- Markova And the -ovich/-ovna becomes -evich/-evna in the presence of certain soft vowels at the end of the father's name i.e Vasiliy, Anatoliy, Vitaliy et. al.
