Guys... ready to crochet?

Recommended Posts

Maybe its a Wisconsin thing? Guy - whats your take on this? :D

ALTOONA, Wis. - This Monday night men’s club doesn’t watch football. Thirty to 40 young men in Altoona, Wis., meet to crochet.

The Male Crochet Club formed about a year ago when one of the men learned the hobby from his girlfriend. A few guys got together, and word spread. Now there are members from virtually every area high school and college.

The guys crochet hats, afghans, doilies and bracelets.

North High School sophomore Samuel James said they also try to make original, fun stuff like slippers. James said crocheting is addicting.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student Andy Pamperin said it just seemed like a cool thing to do — something that’s not normal for guys.

I suspect they probably got this club started as a place to go to hide from all the bullies. Crochet is ideal because it requires allows you to sit still instead of working off the tub of lard on your ass or otherwise move around and lose your gigantic glasses you have to wear. Besides, orthopaedic shoes hurt to walk about in after a long day of monitoring halls.

Seriously - this has to a complete geakfest.

That's kinda funny.

Years ago, I went to a new friends house. He told me to just walk in so I did. Well, he thought I was in my car and that he would her me pull up. Nope, I was on the bicycle.

Any way I walked in and he was very embarassed to have been busted Crocheting. He actually said "Ah shit... don't tell anyone."

Any way I didn't say a word, except to his girlfriend, and for my birthday I had a new scarf. A nice one! I lived in Montana and it can get a bit cold there.

The closest I can come to crocheting is Daisy chaining my parachute lines.

My grandmother crochets beautiful bedspreads, table cloths, and table runners. She tried showing me once but I have no patience to sit still that long. I do love the things she gives me though and will cherish them long after she is gone.

I don't see a problem with guys learning how to do more of this stuff. Heck, if gals can take the auto body classes here at the college I work at, then why can't guys learn how to sew, iron, cook, clean, and make pretty things?

Manyof us do know how to do those things, Mar. We just don't go out and form clubs for them. :D

Did they look like they were crochet'd?

Sewing to save money to afford more jumps is COMPLETELY different.

Right Guys?>:(:D

Those guys in the crochet club are saving money. Think of what they save on dates. :D

I like to crochet and I'm pretty good at it. I like making things for my friends and they appreciate them. It wouldn't be a bad thing to do while football is on because you can multitask...~~April

Too busy waiting for a commercial so that I can grab another beer, and inbetween those - jumping up and down screaming at the idiot referees. Well, that or jumping out of an airplane!

I'm as crafty as they come - you name it, I do it, no lie. I do lots of sewing, knitting etc...

but I've never participated in a club with other 'young' people - let alone a group of guys...

I've heard its the 'up and coming' craft craze...so who knows.

I don't know how I'd feel if my husband gave up the football game to knit :|[:/] I would probably think that it was a phase he'd grow out of... but then again, his 'femanine side' is not his best 'quality' LOL

Hee-hee! I think you're just scared he will make you a nice sweater set and you'll have to wear it out! Just keep the remote where he can see it. He wont' do it given the choice.~~~April

Hi Lin,
Crochetting-- the tedious job of taking a long piece of string and daisy chaining it into some geometric spiderweb like pattern. Who does it really doesn't matter. If they want to take the time, and I mean time, to do it, go nuts.

My late aunt did it a lot, made table covers and you name it. She even did an alter cloth for the church.

An interesting opposite side of the coin might be a group of girls that took up building and flying balsa wood model airplanes. As many times as I've been around model airplane flying activities, the participation factor by females has been about nill.
