CDRINF 1 #1 September 16, 2004 Posted this in "History and Trivia" but am posting here also to cast a wider net. I am very sorry to announce that after operating since April 1958, the Fort Campbell Sport Parachute Club closed this summer. The operation lost much of its financial viability when it lost the use of military aircraft 4 years ago. The manager worked very hard to secure commercial aircraft and off-post arrangements. He departed this summer to pursue educational opportunities. The installation recreation services office decided not to hire a new manager and closed the club. I was heavily involved with the club during two tours at Fort Campbell (1987-1991 & 1998-2001), and intend to write an article for "Parachutist" about the history of the club. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to contribute recollections or photos about the club, especially it's early days and how it operated during the Vietnam era. zulu 0 #7 September 17, 2004 Chris, Sorry this happened. You and I spoke awhile ago about the memories we had there. It was there that I was born into the skydiving community with great people like Susie Hanks, Harry Parrish, and of course the great one Jose Malave. I never got a chance to really thank them for my success in this awesome sport. I have pictures of the good times we spent at the bowling alley after the days jump; eating Jose's favorite Callozones. Dam I wish there was something that could be done to reopen it, alot of us became better people because of the club, I know I did. zulu
katiebear21 0 #8 September 17, 2004 Guess I've got to get stationed there now to resurrect the club! I know, it's not easy at all. We're so lucky here at Ft. Bragg to still have a healthy thriving club with a rigger's loft and thrifty gear rental. Sometimes I forget how good I had it as a new jumper. matthewcline 0 #9 September 18, 2004 Hey All, Well there is along and grand history of the Ft. Campbell Sport Parachuute Activity. Unfortunatly the current world situation isn't going to allow the Ft. Campbell command to support it like they have in the past and would want for its future. There are a few USPA GM DZ's not to far away, Tullahoma is actually near 2 hours away but a popular place to go. The DZ in Paris is temporarily closed. Maybe we can get it up and running again in the near future wit ha concerted effort and with some modernization. Matt edited to support CDRINF and FTCKY SPA.An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
leroydb 0 #10 September 18, 2004 show me the reg that says army people must jump at a fking USPA dropzone. THat would be like the mafia running the police station Quote... and personnaly that is how I read the AR's (Army Regulations) that govern Army personnel and Skydiving. its not like its advertized...Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio... freeflir29 0 #13 September 18, 2004 I didn't start jumping there and I'm MAD AS HELL because of it. I was stationed there with the 19th ASOS and worked for and with the 1/502, 3/502, 5th SFG, 160th, 2/101.......Lord knows what else. Anyway.......I had a few friends that were jumping. For some CRAZY reason I decided fishing was more important. OK...my boat was fun....but....ya know. I kick myself everytime I think about it. Instead........I had to wait for a 14+ month tour in Korea to expire and then I became a SKYMONKEY.
