Evelyn 0 #1 September 20, 2004 Landed in high winds. Don't know exactly what they were but non licensed jumpers were on wind hold. Pulled in a toggle and pulled and pulled, but still got dragged face down by my canopy. Crawled really fast onto my canopy and then sat there to keep it from going anywhere and was casually stowing the brakes and uncollapsing the slider when the truck came speeding up. Tim jumped out and ran up to me and said "are you okay?" I said "yeah, I'm fine". He said they thought I was hurt since I didn't get up after landing. I explained to him that I thought it was a good idea at the time to sit on my canopy. Guess not since I scared a lot of people. So just to let others know, this was new to me, don't sit on your canopy after landing, stand up to let people know you're okay. WFFC 1 #2 September 20, 2004 I tried to get this mentioned during safety day at my old DZ a few years ago, but it didn't fly. Go to the world of scuba and what's the universal sign for 'I'm OK' from a distance? Not to hard to spot and it's universal for one sport, why not adopt it here?----- ~~~Michael

bch7773 0 #4 September 20, 2004 yeah i know what you mean. I accidently downwinded on a off DZ landing a few months ago, and tumbled. Instead of hopping right up, i just laid there for a minute. this of course made everyone who was far away think i was badly injured or unconscious. leroydb 0 #5 September 20, 2004 but realize that if you think you might be hurt. STAY DOWN and be sure you are not hurt. You would not want to further injure yourself!Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio...
FlyingJ 0 #6 September 20, 2004 QuoteGo to the world of scuba and what's the universal sign for 'I'm OK' from a distance? I've just been doing that anyway. With how many skydivers are scuba divers as well I would think that at most dzs there is at least one or two people watching that would understand. Gotta' start somewhere. If more and more people start doing it maybe it will catch on!Killing threads since 2004.
cvfd1399 0 #7 September 20, 2004 I am a leader of a search and rescue dive team. The signal after surfacing and checking in is to give yourself one tap on the head with one hand. What is the deal with the "O''. Everyone Team that I have worked with uses the pat on the head. I wonder how it evolved from making the 2 handed "O'' to a pat on the head? mr2mk1g 10 #8 September 20, 2004 A friend of mine learnt a couple of weeks ago that it's also not a good idea to cut your canopy away and sprint across the exp. landing area simply to film the landing of your friends 500th jump... DZ control saw someone cut away and sprint off out of sight into a dip in the ground. They were convinced someone had biffed in and was receiving aid out there. bendywendy 0 #10 September 20, 2004 It is nice to see everyone stand up so we know they are ok but if it is matter of you getting dragged more or sitting on your canopy - sit on your canopy - they'll get over it. However, rather than landing and bracing against the wind while pulling in one toggle like most people do - land, work on that one toggle while running to the other side of your canopy. It pulls the nose after you, closing off the openings so that the canopy does not refill with wind pull you off your feet and drag you uncerimoneously across the landing area, taxiways, etc., etc. Anytime its even a little windy while you are stowing your toggles if you just casually walk around your canopy to the other side the nose will get covered over and you wont have to worry about a sudden gust. The canopies I jump now aren't a problem but when I was still on good sized canopies any wind would pick me up and take me away since I'm barely 100 lbs.
