*finally* had a cutaway

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I had a malfunction on the 4th tandem of the day. Tension knot in the control line's cascade, I think a D line was involved as well, all of which is weird since it happened after the slider had come down a ways about 2/3s the way through the opening. It was a "fun" one too, spinning surprisingly fast for a tandem. Chopped it, got under the reserve, fixed the line twists and came in for a standup landing right in front of Turtlespeed (who was my vidiot on that jump).

What was really funny is that I told my passenger we had a mal and to "hold on" as I cutaway. He thought I was joking and it took me turning the reserve and facing the falling main, pointing it out to him for my student to believe me. Of course the student didn't know what a reserve looked like, so he didn't really know.

Everyone that was there (he was apart of a larger group of 1st jump tandems) got a huge kick out of it all (I guess since it turned out fine and we even had a nice landing).

They all had a good laugh at the fact that it was my very first cutaway ever. Not too bad I guess, it happened no jump 1296 and was my 395th tandem jump. Brought the rig back into the hanger, dropped it off for the rigger, grabbed another tandem rig/student and met our 182 for a "hot load" tandem.:)
Just had to share with my friends here on DZ.com.B|

Maybe Turtlespeed will post some frame grabs or something. ;)

Right one Aggie D....its about time :) Glad to hear everuone is safe and sound. Bet the tandem wont be coming back for the second jump though. I took a friend of mine once and he had a cutaway on his first tandem. Now he is terrified. hehe

Do you reckon you get more pleasure completing a safe tandem cutaway rather than jumping alone?
The fact that you just saved 2 lives rather than just your own?

So did you hold on to your handles this time?:P

FY'sI, Dave did not hold on to his handles on an intentional cut away on the skyhook demo rig.

Good job by the way.

But do intenional cutaways also count for beers ???

3 parachute system are you planning a funaway directly to your own reserve?

That's Planned cutaway, or breakaway by the way. Most cutaways are intentional, but not planned;):P

I had my first one two weeks ago. ;)

First cutaway on my first jump on new main. :$
I did not expect that the reserve ride would be so much fun. Had to do a couple of breathing exercises before leaving the plane on the second jump on that new main though ;)

very nice dave B| you and i both had firsts. i had my first parachute malfunction, which in turn led to a cutaway. in short, i put my main on new risers and the toggle keepers were loose but i thought 'what the heck.' one came unstowed on opening, hence, a decently fun 3 second ride before i chopped. found all parts, will be ready for aot this weekend. that was 1 of 3 saves for the day. great now i have the mighty mouse song in my head... here i come to save the daaAAAaay. thats my storytime for the night kids. see ya friday!

NICE! B|

I thought you HAD to have a cutaway to even get your tandem rating? Let me know how you avoided that...as someday *knock on wood*, I wouldn't mind doing the same, instead of being forced to cut away for the first time just to get a rating.

Glad everything went well...and congrats on making that many skydives without ever chopping! B|

I'm rated on RWS' systems. Bill Booth believes that tandems are so different from sport rigs that a sport cutaway does absolutely nothing to prepare you for a tandem malfunction.

So in a rig and with a passenger you do cutaway drills in a hanging harness.

Congrats! There was a tandem cutaway at Perris on Saturday and the guy who told me about it was laughing saying that the student was totally unaware that they'd had a malfunction. I think if I was the student on my first tandem I probably wouldn't wanna know.

Glad to hear you did fine through it all, Dave. :)
109 jumps and counting, and I have not had a cutaway yet. I'm jumping a Lotus 170 at a pretty moderate 1.2:1. I once had a lineover that somehow fixed itself, back on jump 43. I had looked up after a hard-ish opening and seen what looked, anyway, like a lineover on the right side, but as I reached and got the brakes, everything inflated out fine. I had consciously thought, "Oh boy, I'm about to have my first reserve ride!" but then it didn't have to happen.

Now that I've been helped to make some refinements to my packing, I am having more reliable, neat openings. Hopefully I won't need the reserve any time soon.
