SpeedRacer 1 #1 September 21, 2004 My observation has been that women are more sensitive to cold and men are more sensitive to heat. And I dont think this has anything to do with body size, because it seems to still be true when the men & women are roughly the same size. Has anyone else noticed that men seem to be more comfortable at lower temperatures than women?? Is this some kinda yin/yang thing? A friend of mine where I used to work had a house by the ocean & would invite a bunch of us down there for the weekend. It seemed that the men were more likely to spend more time actually in the water than the women, and the women mostly sunbathed. And I've also noticed that women seem to get cold outdoors before men do. Similarly, I've noticed that when I take a shower with a woman, she always cranks the hot water WAY up! windcatcher 0 #3 September 21, 2004 wow Speedracer, you have just unveiled a truth previously unknown before by any female/male relationships... man, I always get cold and that's one of the reasons why I'm moving someplace hot after college. If I ever get married, I will hafta compromise with my hubby and let him sleep in the cold, because you can always put on enough clothes to get warm ( unless you're deer hunting below 0 temp. in South Dakota), but you can't take off enough clothes to get cool. Therefore, if the guy is more likely to get hot, the girl should put on a sweater and deal with the colder temp...just my two cents. Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... kelel01 1 #4 September 21, 2004 I used to live with two guys, and they always wanted the air on 60-65. I was wearing sweatshirts in the summer around my house. And I'm not a skinny girl, and they were relatively skinny guys. My mom and dad have the same problem most of the time. It is bizarre how it seems to work that way on average. Now, out of the 9 different female roommates I've had, 1 liked the air on 60-65 as well, but the rest of us were, well . . . sane. Kelly
pajarito 0 #5 September 21, 2004 Disclaimer: I am not claiming that most American women are fat. I don't really think that's true. I think it has to do with body fat % and they typically, on average, have more of it. It's just the way they're built. If it's been your experience that women often complain of the cold, it's probably just because they're American women used to the good life. I've seen Afghan women dragging kids around in thin clothing and sandals in the (f$%*%#g cold) dead of winter and not uttering a single complaint. Meanwhile, I've got so much clothes on, I can hardly walk around and I'm freezing my ass off. I think in a pure survival situation and not using any other resources except for my own body, many women would probably outlast me due to their excess body fat reserves. Therefore, I think in reality most women probably retain heat better than men. An exception with the internal thermostat thing would be when they're pregnant. That thing does radiate heat. AggieDave 6 #6 September 21, 2004 Yup, its the truth. Sadly enough, Morgan and I are at the two ends of the extreme, I like it COLD in the house, I like COLD showers and if I could have the room at 50F at night for sleeping I would. She, on the other hand, doesn't use any cold water mixed into the hot for a shower (atleast thats what it feels like), if its not 90F in the house she's wearing a sweatshirt or wrapped up in a blanket and such. I figured by our 50th year of marriage we'll figure out how to have it just right for both of us.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." usedtajump 1 #8 September 21, 2004 Yes!!! I sit at my desk with a fan running all day to stay comfortable and the lady in the same office sits at her desk all day with a space heater running under her desk. My experience has, for the most part been that when men are comfortable, women are cold and vice versa. The older I get the less I care who I piss off. turtlespeed 226 #9 September 21, 2004 Do men & women have different internal thermostats? simple answer - yes - and they are polar opposites.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

Acensky 0 #16 September 22, 2004 I totaly agree with you. I rented a lookout Cabin for Paul's birthday and it was at 5513 feet and it got really cold up there. It even snowed on Saturday morning. I was bundled up all the time. even to sleep. and we had a propane heater too. Paul was just fine in a pair of jeans and sweatwhirt and I had a couple layers of clothing on. I used to be really warm all the time, but since I found out that I have a thyroid problem and taking meds for it, I get cold really fast and it is hard for me to warm up. Vallerina 2 #17 September 22, 2004 I generally get chillier except at night. For some reason, I get really hot when I'm sleeping, and I radiate heat. So, I'm really messed up! I get colder during the day, but I get much hotter at night (it never gets too cold for me to sleep!)There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
skymama 37 #18 September 22, 2004 QuoteI used to live with two guys, and they always wanted the air on 60-65. Good Lord, I would have had to carry around a portable heater in that place! I keep the A/C at 79 and we run the ceiling fans at night to keep cool under the covers. I keep the heat at 72. Anything below that and I'll have to wear gloves on inside the house. I can never keep my hands and feet warm! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
ChasingBlueSky 0 #19 September 22, 2004 I've been told it also has to do with lack of Iron that most women seem to have. Also, it depends on where you live like Parajito said. When we were in Mexico, both the guys and girls were wearing tank tops and shorts while walking around at night - with sweat pouring out of all of us. The locals all had on long sleeve shirts and pants. BTW - speaking of temps. I always found it interesting that my mom would need the house COLD in the summer but HOT in the winter. The two temps the house were kept at were never even close. I've noticed this pattern with a lot of people - and once I pointed out to my roommate, he stopped messing with the thermostat. So, I think some of it is menatl as well. I do keep a fan on in my office all day, but only because I hate stale office air - I love a nice breeze. Steel 0 #20 September 22, 2004 For me its more about money. In the winter time I want to keep the house as cold as possible and wear sweatshirts and sweatpants instead. In the summertime I want that airconditioner working the least possible, I once got a $300 dollar electric bill in aug/2001. So whether I keep the house at 75,78,80 or 82, I just have to get used to it and I am prepared to do that. Women have more of a tendency to whine and complain about stuff that they should just accept as something that needs to be done.If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass. Nightingale 0 #21 September 22, 2004 only about 20% of women suffer from iron deficiency. (Mayo Clinic) I've had my iron checked, and its fine, and I'm still almost always cold.
SpeedRacer 1 #22 September 22, 2004 well some of you have said, "it's because women have more % body fat" but that doesn't fit the observation. if it was because women have more body fat, then women would have an EASIER time keeping warm than men, not the other way around. and the idea that "its because American women have it so easy" doesn't hold water, because my observations have been (mostly) comparing American men with American women. wmw999 2,593 #25 September 22, 2004 Interesting. Love the characterization. Speaking as a woman, of course I find that I keep cool in warm weather very well; I can keep the house quite warm as compared with how most people like it and be comfortable. I've spent 3 summers in Houston without A/C, so I do know whereof I speak. It's partly about the money for me, too. So I replaced my A/C unit, and now my highest summer bill hasn't gone over $150 with careful temperature setting. Winter is easier -- it's why we have clothes. You can add more clothes if you're cold, and use a heating pad on the feet after climbing into bed at night (man my feet and hands get cold!)
