smiles 0 #1 September 24, 2004 I grabbed some DVDs on sale recently and discovered Natalie Merchant in a different way. COME TOGETHER This is a DVD of the live broadcast tribute concert dedicated to the music and vision of John Lennon. NY 2001- Various artists performed songs written by John Lennon: Natalie Merchant chose the song “Nowhere Man” to perform---which I enjoyed immensely. So- I went back to purchase Natalie Merchant live in NY DVD (1999) with the 5.1 channel sound delivering a realistic concert environment and capturing the instrumentals and more importantly, Merchant's voice & natural performance, ...just stunning. - last week I caught her performance on David Letterman as she sang "Sally Ann" off her new cd "The house carpenter's daughter" which I hope will also be sold DVD. This took me to her website in search of her latest release: http://www.nataliemerchant.com under audio- you can listen to a clip of "Sally Ann" Also watch live performance of "I'm not going to beg" filmed in Paris 2002 and Motherland tour video and listen to songs like "Break your heart"..."Wonder"..."Jealousy"..."Just can't last"... Couldn't find "Build a Levee"...another of my favorites. Natalie Merchant is the most naturally gifted female musician. She has a reliance on ballads--she's great with them, but knowing how equally great she is with uptempo fare (like 'Jealousy') I am now looking forward to seeing her in concert live-some of the songs will take on a different life of their own. Fantastic potent melodies and spine tingling lyrics. I've listened to her live in concert on a system that is capable of reaching the deep and powerful depths of the bass, the dynamics of the rhythms and the clarity of Natalie's voice, and appreciate her more than I ever did. "Natalie Merchant is a mysterious and unique singer. If Natalie is one thing, it's definitely a natural beauty. She is a woman completely free of pretension, who refuses to buy into the mainstream notions of what a female artist should look like. She is revered for her ability to succeed on talent, creative introspection and confidence, not on appearance." Natalie Merchant brought the music of her album, "Motherland," to Honolulu for a one-nighter at the Sheraton Waikiki. 2002 Asked what she was doing after the show, she said, "Playing Scrabble with Erik and going skydiving in the morning!" peacefuljeffrey 0 #3 September 24, 2004 I'm not a "fan" of Natalie Merchant, and it took me a while to appreciate her "breathy" kind of voice, but there are some songs that I really like a lot. In fact, I guess they're all on "Tigerlily" because I don't have any other albums by her. My favorites are Carnival, River, Wonder, and My Beloved Wife. River is about the death of River Phoenix. I guess they may have been friends. In the song, she chastises the press: "Your vultures' candor, your casual slander, you murder his memory... He's gone... We know... It's nothing but a tragedy." My Beloved Wife, somehow, is on a CD mix that they play over the intercom speakers at Skydive Sebastian. It is one of the most phenomenally SAD songs I have ever heard in my life. It's about a man whose wife got sick and died, and how he wants to go into death with her and renounce the joy in his life because he's so sad she is not with him. I love songs that touch me emotionally. Remember "One Tin Soldier"? -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" Zenister 0 #4 September 24, 2004 I was a bigger fan when she was with 10,000 manics, but i do enjoy a good bit of her solo stuff... unfortunately most of it was CD's burned for me by friends and that entire folder has vanished in the last year... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. ccowden 0 #5 September 24, 2004 I am a HUGE Natalie fan! I have liked her since abour 1992 and think she has only gotten better over the years. I own ALL her music, with and without 10,000 Maniacs, and even have a couple Maniacs albums on wax. I have seen her in concert 5 times (incredible) and have even met her. She is so sweet in person you can hardly believe it! She asks a ton of question about me and just kept talking to me. You would think she would just rush right by you, but she actually wanted to have a conversation! Glad you found such an appreciation for her! She really is amazing! I attached a the pic from when I met her. I was pretty mad how bad it turned out, but certainly happy to have it. It was taken in 1999.
Lindsey 0 #6 September 24, 2004 I loved Blind Man's Zoo. It's still one of my favorite CDs. I haven't listened to her a whole lot since 10,000 Maniacs though. But she is definately talented. linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
christoofar 0 #7 September 24, 2004 Hmm she is a really good singer, but I liked her more in 10,000 Maniacs. Her on-stage stuff has always been good, never been disappointed (unlike Stevie Nicks in her "im too tired to sing... I think I'll just sing Blahblahblah... blah blah, words words, blah ok thank you everybody!!!! ). But The Cranberries, Avril and Alanis Morisette all sort of copy-cat each other. They probably also have one thing in common (can you guess what it is? okay I'll give you a hint... Indigo Girls) ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES!
