camera phones

Recommended Posts

I'm sick of my old cell phone and am going to get a new one. The camera phones look like a fun gimmick, but I'm wondering how useful they really are. The advertising says you can send photos to another US Cellular customer (e.g.), an email address, or an online photo album. I take that to mean that you *can't* send photos to another camera phone if the other person doesn't have the same carrier. So my questions for those of you who have camera phones are a) do you actually use it? (beyond the first couple weeks of owning it) and b) is sharing pictures with other camera phones relatively common and easy or uncommon due to others not using the same carrier?

I hate my Sprint Sanyo picture phone. It's a POS. The photos are too poor in quality to be useful as more than a haha when people call you and their picture pops up and I usually don't bother putting them in anyway.

I want my Motorola StarTac back and probably should've ordered a Motorola off the website in hindsight!!

Funny! I just took a picture about 2 mins ago of my coworker! I'll load it up here when I get back from Starbucks!

Yes! I get naked pictures frequently (okay, not as frequently as I would like.)

I love my camera phone! Ask anyone who has seen me with it! I use it ALL the time!

What do you normally do with the pictures...upload them to your computer or use the phone to send them to someone else. If the latter, are you limited to people who have the same carrier? I really like my US Cellular service plan, but don't have any friends who use it.

My favorite use of the camera in my phone is to take visual notes. So, say for instance I'm parking in some huge building and I want to remember where I am, rather than whipping out a pen and paper, I just flip open the phone and click off a photo.

You said it best.....fun gimmick....still neat to have just in case of those times when I would say "Damn I wish I had a picture phone right now". Though that is few and far between.

Hmm...that's a good question. I've never tried to send it to someone who didn't have my carrier. I upload pictures to my computer, and I send some to wildblue.

And, YES, we are quite busy here today!!!! :D

Cellphone cameras are basically a gimmick, although some Japanese and European mdoels do have much higher quality cameras. I've attached one of tbe best pictures I've managed to take with my Sprint Sanyo 5500, taken indoors with the cameras built-in "flash" (really just a bright LED). It looks better if you scale it by 50% like Val did.

What do I use my camera phone for? Every once in a while I see something cool or funny and take a picture of it. On Wednesday I leave work, kill an hour at the bookstore across the street, and then go to class (no time to commute home, no friends in the area). I use the camera to take pictures of the covers of books that I am interested in, so that I can get them from Amazon or the library. I associate some people's picture with their caller ID info. Sometimes I forget my Sony or want to take a candid (like the attached pic).

Still, the phones with the best features tend to have cameras.

I think they are great! My phone is the Samsung E-715
http://www.samsung.com/Products/MobilePhone/SGH/MobilePhone_SGH_SGH_E715.asp and service with T-Mobile. I can send pics to any other T-mobile phone (never done that) but I can also send them directly from my phone to any email address. I can also upload to my PC and post. ;)

I have a friend who can't attend many out of state boogies due to work/family obligations. I send pics to his email address from the boogies just to include him in the fun (and remind him what a weenie he is).

If I remember correctly, with Sprint and the Vision plan it only costs airtime to send pictures to another phone or the Internet. The receiver may have to pay if they don't have Vision. Without Vision, it costs airtime and a per-kilobyte fee to send pictures anywhere (and possibly also a test-messaging fee or similar).

Again, I haven't looked at my contract in a while, so I could be wrong.

What costs is the sending of data thru the wireless network whether it be accessing the internet /w the phones browser (ie. shopping for ringtones and such), sending/receiving pics, text messages, emails and any of those info services like weather or sports that are sent to your phone. They (Cingular in my case) have per use charges unless you sign up for a data plan that starts at $19.99 for 5MB.

I don't think it matters if the receiver of your pics is on the same network or not. I've sent some to my sister in law that uses Sprint.

a few things I'd like to see before I'd buy a camera phone.

-better ccds... 640x480 is fine, but not if you use eyeball cam quality ccds, the pictures look too grainy. I don't need to be able to print off my shots, but if I put them on the web, I don't want people to laugh.

-more space on the phone. this is definitely on it's way with newer phones using flash media of various formats.

-if you are going to put bluetooth and a camera on the phone then for love of all things sacred, allow me to use the bluetooth to transfer the images to my computer. (notice I say "allow", the motorola v700 had this ability until the service providers got their hands on it and disabled it.)
