If you guys want to see some "real" football with no fancy protection - check if your local TV shows the AFL Grand Final from Melbourne. It starts in a couple of hours and is always a great occasion. This year it is the Brisbane Lions against Port Adelaide.

I was surprised to find they do actually have a league over there, mostly ex-pats obviously. On GF day in 2002, there was an organised pub crawl in Chicago which ended up in a bar showing the game on 20 screens. It was absolutely packed and really weird to hear all those Aussie accents after so long.

The American friends we took along just didn't 'get' it.

LOL I watched a game over in Melbourne a few weeks ago - looks like netball for boys. They BOUNCE the ball at kickoff?!? Plus most of the lads playing were skinny as & would snap in two if they ever played proper rugby (union)

Hey mikkey, I just got through watching and that was a great game. I'm in Texas and not being very familiar with the teams involved and only having learned the "laws of the game" somewhat about a month ago I was able to follow the action pretty well. The team I was pulling for, Port Adelaide, won.

I've watched AFL several times before but don't remember there being as much fighting as was involved in that match. I thought it rather funny that two guys are squared off beating the shit out of each other while the game just goes on around them like nothing out of the ordinary is happening.

Aussie Rules rocks.

Then tune into ANY Rugby Football Match. If you want artistic play, then watch Rugby Union. If you want to see the only English Blood Sport that hasn't been banned yet then watch Rugby League.

It's fairly easy to follow, fun sport where "protection" is limited to a groin box and a headband to stop the blood getting in your eyes!

Yeah, often happens in the Grand Final. It is the last game and if you get suspended you serve it early next season - so the boys get quite aggressive.

Was a good fast game with lots of great goals.

And in regard to difference between Aussie Rules and Rugby (union and League). Very different sport. The boys are not as big as these plaeyers but it is a much faster game and they run much more so you cant be built like a fridge - you need to able to turn and run faster and you have to be able to jump high to mark the ball. Still a very physical game.
