Mt. St. Helens waking up?

Recommended Posts

Are you sure it wasn't Amazon breaking a new speed record?

I haven't seen a pic of the volcano in years - does it still have that very distinct crater left over from the 80 blast? Maybe in my volcanic ignorance that would make me want to guess that a new eruption probably couldn't be as deadly, right?

Also - I know there was talk for a while about Mt Rainer going off, or is it still very dormant? I remember reading it was listed as one of the most likely dormant volcanos to go off next, and it would cause billions of damage.

I remember watching the dramatic movie about the eruption growing up. We had cable back then and they played it all the time on HBO....the main character was the geologist that died during the eruption and had cameras set up across the mountain. Those pics are the ones in National Geographic I believe.

Is it a Coincidence?:S
Mammoth mountain the last two weeks has been keeping people up all the way to South Lake Tahoe with little jolts ranging from 2.2-4.5.

Was that Amazon breaking a new speed record there too? :P

Yes, the mountain still has that distinctive crater. They are saying if the mountain had an 'event', it would NOT be like the other eruptions. All of us in this area, hope that Mt. Rainier nevers 'wakes' up. If I remember correctly, it has had a few earthquakes but nothing to signify any action. It would be a shame if Rainier lost its top and no longer looked like it does now.

Maybe Bill Gates bought out the rights to eruption on Mt Rainer and he is going to package it for free in the next windows :D

that could bring a new definition to the blue screen of death!

sorry, geek humor.

That would be a 'shame'??? :S:o Girlfriend that will be the LEAST of our problems!!! I don't think we'll be around to say "Oh darn our lovely view is gone." :o:o:o:(:P

Yeah I'm watching Miss Helen pretty close...I remember the last one, and seeing the aftermath was awesome...but for a little kid, it didn't have as much impact as it does on me now looking back through the family photos...

* A picture of a tiny Acme girl in her auntie's arms under an enormous cedar tree with mud marks 30 feet high...

* And a barn that I thought was so 'cute' because the roof was only as high as my head. I didn't understand that we were walking on 15 foot deep solidified volcanic mud. (<--And nope...the critters didn't get out in time. :()

Oh, I realize the danger involved if Rainier decided to 'burp'! It's such a beautiful mountain though. Living fairly close to the mountain worries me....a lot.

The kapow DZ and the towns in between it and Mt Ranier will be wiped out by the big mud flow if Mt Ranier pops it cork.

Hopefully there will be some activity (like St Helens)prior to the big one so everyone can have lots of time to leave the area. When/if Ranier pops Kapow has something like 15mins.

BTW heard on the news that the Mt Ranier area is haveing practice drills this week , blowing sirens, and maybe the school kids heading for high ground.

FWIW Ranier is covered with this nice thick Glacier that will turn to water when things heat up resulting in a instant flush of mud and stuff.

For more info on Mt ranier, St Helens, Mt hood etc. google the "pacific rim ring of fire"

Yikes I'm moving to Florida:S

Florida - hurricanes. B|
Oklahoma - tornados. B|
Washington - ring o' fire. B|
California - earthquakes. B|

Ok, that leaves...uh, the mid-west, with their freezing winters and wind storms and lightning. B|

Eegad. :(

The storms we get in Chicago are not as bad as what they get in Florida, Nebraska OK, or Texas. They do get strong, but its not that bad in the long run.

The winters can suck if you don't have the right setup (re:heated garage) and it forces you to change your lifestyle so it makes life interesting instead of boring. Besides, if you lived somewhere tropical all the time - where do you go to relax on vacation? Winters are much easier when you take one or two breaks away from the snow.

Hmmm. All of California's earthquakes in the last 20 years plus Florida's hurricanes put together can't beat Chicago's heat wave, which killed at least 739 people in 5 days.

Y'all in Chicago get some, too!!

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Yeah, they've been talking about a lahar warning system for the Puyallup valley for years. A lahar there about 500 years ago covered everything in a layer of mud and rocks to a depth of 25 feet. They seem to happen every 500-1000 years.

That heat was well documented to be mostly elderly that wouldn't listen to adivce, or were out of touch and had no idea what was going on. We now have a system in place to check in on the elderly in both extreme cold and heat days with daily public reminders.

I remember that summer - it was hot no matter what or where you went, or at what time. We haven't had anything that bad since. But just like all huge major disasters in this city, it only takes once to learn from it and for the city to put a plan into action. There hasn't been a blizzard since 79 that shut down this city, not even the 28 inches we got a few years back. I was at work the next morning [:/]

A lot of ice can make the difference in the amount of moisture in a pyroclastic flow. Superheated steam (1000 deg F) traveling at 100 mph. :o

A solid blast or getting whacked by a rock is one thing. Getting flash-cooked just sounds nasty. :P
