I was getting my picture for my learners permit. Although it was a side view picture this was an important thing at my high school as everyone wanted to see your license... :S
I got all dressed up, shaved my 5 facial hairs and was looking good. It was my turn to get the picture taking and I had a good smile and was waiting for the picture.
The lady behind the camera started softly at first but got louder and louder: "Look at the wall, No don't look at the wall, Look at the wall, DON'T LOOK AT THE WALL, LOOK AT THE WALL!!!"
I was thinking "What's wrong with this lady?" Which unfortunately transferred to my facial expression. The second I realized it: Click and it was immortalized as my photo for 4 1/4 years. I looked like an escaped mental patient. :(
It sucked in high school but it always one the worst DMV photo contests in college. :)Just looked at my current photo: Smiling, but I look stoned, just wearing a T-shirt, unshaven, and look scruffy. :)
Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting
If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

My son went to the DMV and the inspector told him to change lanes. He refused because he did not feel it was safe to do so, so he was flunked.

He went back two weeks later and was told that he passed everything but parking. He pulled up at an angle, backed up, and then pulled in straight. He was told that he had to do it in one motion (while driving an El Camino). I told the inspector that it was not possible. I was told, "that is the rule". When I told the inspector that she couldn't do it, they "requested" that I leave the facility.

I got thrown out of the DMV. :D

What timing!

Just the other day I was listening to co-workers complain about having to go to the DMV and was making fun of them.

Well, I just purchased my dad's company car and it is in his name and I was going to leave it there for a little while until I was in a better position to pay the tax, etc. I'll be damned. The night I was kidding with co-workers about it my dad tells me that because his bday is Nov. 1 that his registration is up and I have to get it switched into my name.

DOH!

As for a funny story - In NY they take your picture once and it stays in the system. The last time I had my license renewed I got a letter with it that told me because of the poor quality of my photo I could come in for a free update photo. I mean, how bad does your photo have to be for even the DMV to say it isn't good enough!
Killing threads since 2004.

I was issued a minor speeding ticket once, and the officer had written on the ticket that to resolve the ticket I could send in $100 to the address on the back of the ticket.

I sent in the $100 and forgot about it.

Fast-forward two years... I was out on a fishing trip with my two sons and a neighbor boy. Pulled over for speeding in a speed-trap area. The officer checks my license, and informs me that there is a warrant out for my arrest, because of an outstanding un-paid ticket.

I claim it's a mistake, to no avail. The officer confiscates my license. Fortunately, he does a "courtesy arrest", where he lets me go, since I obviously wasn't a dangerous fellow, trying to elude the law, and I had three kids with me.

Investigating the mess, it turned out that on the first ticket, the officer had written an incorrect fine amount: instead of $100 it should have been $150. So when I sent in $100, as instructed by the ticket, the DMV computer registered it as an insufficient payment, and considered it to be an outstanding "unpaid" ticket. Then they never bothered to tell me that I still owed more money. So for two years I drove around like a ticking time bomb, just waiting to get thrown in jail by some police officer, for a mistake made by another police officer.

After clearing that up with the DMV, I went to the police station to get my confiscated license back. They had lost it. I had to go the DMV and pay to get a replacement license.

Ack!

Due to Minnesota's attempt to take over the role of Immigration from the DoHS - we have the wonderful 'Status Check' provision.

Due to expiring passport, had to rush back to Canada to get it taken care of, come back with updated work visa, present all documents to DMV in Winona, only to have them mail the copies into the central office for processing. Had a wonderful letter in the mail informing me that my license was revoked due lack of updated documentation. Finally got it all cleared up, the folk at the local DMV simply said they never saw insutrctions tell them what to do - I am guessing they never saw it because they never bothered to read it.

Found out the screw up is still on my license when pulled over for 'excessive acceleration while turning' (I wasn't going to argue, I had the back end of the car hung so far out that I was fully occupying 2 lanes while executing the U-turn) and officer jokingly mentioned that I just got my license back recently and he was going to let me off the hook. Wheh!

The joys of gov't beaucracy, eh? Almost makes me want to move across the river back to Wisconsin, even if they have higher income tax.
