I'd consider flash flooding and wildfires diasters too

Besides all the hurricanes, Vanilla Ice has a home in Miami. That's got to be considered some kind of natural disaster. ;)

Disaster, sure. Natural? Uh, I dunno about that...

I look much younger than I am.... That quake was about 30 years ago. All I remember is my mom throwing me under the kitchen table and the chandelier falling on top of us breaking the table in two. Good fun!!! ;)

Ugh. You said "moist". I hate that word...The word alone icks me out.

I completely second that. I don't care if you are talking about a cake or a hoo-ha - that word is just moldy sounding.

Jeanne - be careful up there with all that ash in the air. The lungs don't like it and you will blow dirty snot. :D

Ok here goes... Sunday am was quiet. Spooky quiet. I grew up on a farm, and there is always noise going on. That day there was not a sound. It reminded me of a total solar eclipes we had 5 years earlier, at noon. Death makes more noise than I heard that day. 8am ish, heard what I thought was a sonic boom. At the time we had those in the area but this one was REALLY big. No big deal. 9:30ish, noticed a really big black cloud heading over the valley I lived in. (Kittitas) in WA. Rain-I thought. This cloud just kept getting bigger and bigger. And darker. I figured something was wrong. I was 18 at the time, went down stairs to see of the folks knew what was hapening. My sis and parents were no where to be found. (They had gone to church).

By 10:30-11am, it as getting DARK. by noon, you couldn't go outside and see your hand in front of your face. The stuff fallin down, looked like snow, but it was hot. (One of those things I will never forget). People were trying just to get home. the news finally let everyone know that the mountain blew up, and to stay inside. No one knew if ash was harmful or not. EVERYONE was locked in for 3 dark days, before it finally started letting up. When all was said and done we had 10 inches of heavier than snow like substance on the ground, and a white out was to follow. So much dust in the air, it was like fog thicker than you've ever seen. "bout a week after that, dust starts to settle, cleanup begins, shovelling, scraping, and bagging. DAMN, we had to bag everything. Now when you drive in Washington, notice some of the hills between the freeway lanes, it's piled up ash.

BTW, ash make great crops for the next two years, and very good in pottery.

Just some of my memories.

This was it.... guess it was larger than I remember! :o I was 5... :)

Slight damage was reported at a number of northern Utah towns from a March 28, 1975, earthquake centered near the Idaho - Utah border. Ridgedale (VIII) and Malad City (VII), Idaho, sustained the most damage from this magnitude 6.1 shock. All of northern Utah felt the tremor; the 160,000 square kilometer felt area also include parts of Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, and a few places in northwestern Colorado.

It's nice to see some Breaking News that is just a natural disaster rather than a sociological disaster

Hmm. I guess it _has_ been a couple of days since we've had any breaking news of tornadoes, earthquakes or hurricanes here in the US...;)

I remember that morning. Hearing that explosion was something else, and we didn't have the TV or radio on so we had no idea what it was! It shook the house! Luckily, we lived north of the Mt., so we didn't get that heavy ash cloud like you experienced. We got a thin dusting of the ash, what an eerie day that turned out to be. :(

Man when Rainier just shakes a little.. Orting and Puyallup.. and a whole bunch of other towns in all the river valleys around there will dissappear under mudflows..... and it does not even need to erupt.. just a little shaker to get the rock and ice moving.

i always thought it was funny seeing the 'volcano evacuation route' signs on Meridian.... traffic moves at 10 mph on normal days....:S

:D I always thought that was funny too! If there isn't/wasn't any warning we don't stand a chance:(.

Well, I DO live in Houston, and the picture was taken in the summer, so yeah, I was a bit... sweaty.

I have a vile of ash from the first eruption in our time. It was hell for my Dad. Luckily, he was on the opposite side of the explosion. EXPLOSION is an understatement, half the mountain blew off and the atmospheric aftermath (dust) blew a full 360 degrees across the globe. I guess a meteorite really did kill dinosaurs.
