ACMESkydiver 0 #1 October 4, 2004 I can't get my point across without these damn faces! Is it ruining our ability as a society to communicate?! Is it aiding our society in communicating?? Or are we just too lazy to type longer explanations of our sentiments? I tried to send a 'joking' e-mail out a while ago and the person receiving it thought I was pissed...where's the '' in Outlook E-mail when you need it?!? Am I the only emoticon addict? What do you do when you don't have them to use?!? ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

Zenister 0 #6 October 4, 2004 QuoteIs it aiding our society in communicating??...... aiding imo... this is a new medium, it has the forms of several existing ones but its 'ways and means' are different and evolving toward better understanding, particularly as it is a cross cultural platform... Quotewhere's the in Outlook E-mail when you need it?!? ;) or ;-) if you have to have a nose :P smilies (new words even, and new uses for punctuation, no reason to go into it here, but there is a thread in the SC exactly about this subject..) existed in text long before the graffic 'emoticons' took over..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. kelel01 1 #7 October 4, 2004 Me, me, me! I type e-mails, and I don't have all the emoticons I need. It drives me nuts not to have a tone present in what I write. Argh!

Bolas 5 #9 October 4, 2004 I use them in my work email's and instant messages all the time. I made what I thought was a blatantly sarcastic comment to one of the regular's here at WFFC and she said " If your gonna be sarcastic, you have to use smilies..." Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
windcatcher 0 #10 October 4, 2004 since I'm a communications major, I had to comment on this one. The use of emoticons aid in comm, because over the internet most comm is lost since there is no way to gauge nonverbal communication. One of my textbooks says that over 90% of communication is NONVERBAL!!! Yeah, it was either 75%, 80% or 90%, can't remember. and I can't help it either, I've a very expressive person so these faces help the comm.process...speaking of which, I have a midterm tom. over 35 different comm.theories!!! Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...

popsjumper 2 #17 October 6, 2004 being a relative newbie to DZ.com, please forgive if I am off base here.... Emoticons, hmmmmm..... 1. a crutch used to express feelings and/or intent to overcome a lack of writing skills. (example: well, you know how I feel ) 2. fun to play with (no example needed) 3. a device used to disguise real intent. (You are an arrogant asshole ) What did people do to express feelings in writing before emoticons were born? Still, all-in-all, they are fun and useful in today's society and have a definite place in expressive writing. So, in light of that, let me say.... My reality and yours are quite different.
