Cornholio 0 #1 October 7, 2004 I don't know, maybe it's just me... But I get so irritated when people that I am IM'ing with say "bye". WTF ?? Why say "bye" ? Are you going someplace ? IM = Always on. Why say goodbye ?? I mean you have a pretty good idea when the conversation is over. I can see it if it's someone you don't talk to that much, or the other person has to LOGOFF, but if you're just going to stop talking, why say "bye ?" We use IM here at work (internal App) and it just bothers me when some guy down the hall says "bye." Like, 'where you going ?' 'Nowhere, you're in your fucking cube! ' Does anyone feel like I do ? windcatcher 0 #2 October 7, 2004 um, someone have a bad day at work? {{{{{{{{{huggy}}}}}}}}}}}} Ya know, life is too short to get worked up over trivial things, but to answer your question no, its not annoying....you have to end the conversation somehow. Even though it may only be over the internet, it's still a conversation. And technically, with IM, you CAN leave the computer or log off, which would require a cordial goodbye. Sorry, just being a communications major dork! Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...

Girlfalldown 0 #11 October 7, 2004 Dude it annoys the hell out of me too! It's like a never ending conversation. You just type something and if the person isnt there they'll get back to you when they see it! DUH! We all understand this. If it's around noon and they haven't replied it's a strong possibility they are at lunch. If I had to tell every single person who I was in a conversation that I was leaving it would take me forever. You know what else is irritating? When you type hang on a sec or phone or my boss is creeping up behind me and they have to REPLY with something like OK, I'll be here.. NO shit? You'll be there? Wow, thanks, now my boss just saw the window pop up again when I'd closed it because I was trying to hide it from him. THANKS A LOT! That shit just pisses me off. Course everything pisses me off right now. GRRR! I just watched Phenomenon and got all pissed off. I can't believe the fuckin guy dies! It's a freakin tumor! What happened to the goddamn aliens? what were we talking about again? -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)
skymama 37 #12 October 7, 2004 I say good-bye to people whom I've been having an ongoing conversation with. If there hasn't been any conversation for awhile, then I don't start a new one just to say good-bye.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

flyingferret 0 #16 October 7, 2004 Easy killer I think it depends on the way you use IM, you are assuming everyone uses it like you do. I run Trillian, connected to 4 IM networks, for work, home, and jumpers. Additionally, I am not 'always on' at home. At work, Trillian never closes. But at home, if I leave for more than an hour or two, I shut down Trillian and sometimes the PC. Not sure why, even as a geek, I like to disconnect sometimes. Additionally, the people make a difference. At work, I never say bye because the people are staying online working just like I am. However, with friends and particularly romantic interests, it is a whole other set of protocol. If there is a running conversation with someone I typically say ttyl, just to be polite if they come back with anything and wonder where I went. This is particularly true of interests/girlfriends it is only polite to not wander off in the middle of a conversation. This situation is somewhat amplified by the fact, that I in a 'perma-away' state. I am always away, and don't always change it. A lot of time is reading "I am doing random stuff, leave me a message" For some people that is enough, others I go a little further and say bye. It raises an interesting point about the way communication is (d)evolving. Email follows much less ettiquette than written word, unless maybe at work. IM has even less ettiquette. I am kind of torn on this and could interpret it two ways; one would be a devolution from written conversation, the other would be an evolution of quick verbal chat.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. AggieDave 6 #18 October 7, 2004 That's why a 'ttyl' is more appropiate if you have to quit IMing and get work done or something along those lines.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
