Dougiefresh 0 #1 October 8, 2004 So I've spent the last ten years or so trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life. I'm not in love with what I do, which is etch microcantilevers out of silicon in grad school. So basically I'm confused about wtf to do with the rest of my life. How about you? Did you figure it out eventually? Or is everyone just wandering around in a daze trying to pay the bills and find sex/love?Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
windcatcher 0 #2 October 8, 2004 Of course I know what I want to do with the rest of my life...jump! Actually, one of my goals is to work in communications and help everyone improve their relationships, by helping them improve their communication skills. I'm actually very content with my life and I KNOW it's going the right direction. It feels so awesome to be so young still and know that I am not going to be living my life chasing after the wrong things; I know that when I am old I will be able to see I lived my life the right way, not getting sucked into materialism and trying to keep up with the "Joneses". Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...
cvfd1399 0 #3 October 8, 2004 I have spent 8 years as a firefighter ans I still dont know what I want to do. Spending 120 days away from wife and home, and to this date all I have brought home money wise after taxes is $15,700. I have all the certifications, I am a leader of the search and rescue dive team, but I feel cheated doing this line of work. I can only imagine how wife feels. I know I know every one says you chose this line of work and you know how much it paid when you got into it, but DAMN it hurts when you spend all that time away from home, spend all day and night going to calls where 25% of the people do not appreciate what you are trying to do FOR them and only get paid that ammout. I went to a call last night on a wreck, and a driver of a car wating in line after I blocked one lane of the road off for safety had the nerve to come up to me yelling and telling my to move the truck.....I was like I will move the FIRETRUCK when I am done helping the INJURED person in the WRECKED car that is IN a WATER FILLED DITCH! In short(my vent lol) I know how you feel.
ScottishJohn 25 #4 October 8, 2004 Quote So I've spent the last ten years or so trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life Why not just live it day to day. If your gonna spend all your time thinking about what you are going to do with your life then life will pass you by. If you don't like your job then change it. What job whould you like , and how are you going to get it. You may have to retrain in a totally unrelated field to what you are doing at the moment to get that job and experience that you need. Only you can change it but don't spend the next 10 years thinking about it. Do it NOW---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers

champu 1 #6 October 8, 2004 Trying to "improve one's situation in life" is an almost insurmountable task, it's like quiting drinking. Goals set up like that are bound to fail, and that's why it's usually advised not to quit drinking, but to just get through today without a drink. Don't make grandiose plans of a better life, just do a few more things you enjoy today.

FlyingJ 0 #9 October 8, 2004 My answer doesn't quite fit into the poll. I went to college and for the last 5 years lived in NYC getting started in a career that I absolutely loved. I worked upwards of 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 days a week but loved every second of it. A few months ago though I realized that while I loved everything I was doing and where I was living I wasn't quite ready to settle down yet and wanted to live a little. I accpeted an AmeriCorps (like PeaceCorps but domestic for those that don't know) position in the Florida Keys where I would be working with high school kids in an environmental study program that would have me diving with them. Heaven! I chose the Keys because when I was done with a year of volunteering I wanted to find a job that would do nothing more than pay for scuba diving. Well, the funding for the position fell through. My two week visit with my family in Atlanta has turned into a little under 3 months so far. I haven't been anywhere near family since I left right after high school and now I'm having an amazing time getting to know them all again, this time as an adult. Now here I am never having made it to Florida, never found that AmeriCorps position, not once been in the water scuba diving since I moved, and living with my family again (which I said I would never do). The funny thing is that I am loving the hell out of my life right now. The part I hadn't mentioned yet was that I went with my dad and brother randomly one Saturday shortly after I arrived to make a tandem skydive. I am now working every temp job I can find in order to pay for skydiving. Nothing went according to plan, but I am the happiest I have ever been and loving every second of it. I have no idea what is next, but I'm taking it one step at a time and just going with the flow! Edited to add: And, uh, if you know of any jobs available in the Atlanta area, let me know!!!Killing threads since 2004.

The 6th grader is now a senior in college and the week after I got home we celebrated her 21st birthday. Some of it has taken some getting used to! Getting to know my parents again has been the best thing. They are totally new people (to me) now that everyone is grown. It's amazing to see how they've grown together again.
