The main reason she took the I40 is that the I10 bridge/causeway over Escambia Bay here in FL was destroyed by Ivan. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. If you start at John O'Groats, you'd only get to maybe the Lake district in 6 hours. If you start at the north end of Shetland, you might get to Perth (northern end of our motorway netwrk), but thats really pushing it, and you'd have to schedule ferries and stuff.
