AggieDave 6 #2 October 11, 2004 Due to his filming he brought underwater and SCUBA to the masses. If it wasn't for him, SCUBA wouldn't be where it is today.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Sheenster303 0 #3 October 11, 2004 I've always had the same question, but I never had the guts to ask in fear that I would look stupid. Thanks for taking one for the team! I'm so funny I crack my head open! P.M.S. #
quade 4 #4 October 11, 2004 I guess it's a generational thing. I grew up watching these amazing films of things that nobody had ever seen or done made by this little quirky french guy with an outrageous accent. Things that today you might think are pretty simple, but nobody had ever filmed them before. He invented all his own gear too. These amazing underwater jetpacks (as well as the most basic regulator that made SCUBA possible). An amazing researcher not really known for his research, but rather in getting people to open their eyes to what is out there. If you don't know why he was so special, you simply grew up in a different time. The guy was a freekin' superstar.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

He was the Edison of the sea.He was like his own little NASA of the underwater world.Jacque Rocked !So you never saw Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" then either ?Kids these days.... SpeedRacer 1 #9 October 11, 2004 QuoteHe is a diver, oceanographer person. Why so special? well, for one thing, he was one of the actual inventors of SCUBA diving. (SCUBA = self contained underwater breathing apparatus) and he did underwater videography the likes of which had never been seen before. If you can't find anything much on him it because you're just not trying. The guy is a legend, there is shitloads of info out the on him. Not only was he instrumental in developing SCUBA (as stated) he also deleveop many underwater video techniques, and has helped catalogue a VAST ammount of information on undersea life and oceanographyYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! Little known fact he was also of the original spear fishermen, he taught the guys down here in the gulf of mexico how to "brain" a large fish etc. Still all in all the world of SCUBA is much better because of him. LouDiamond 1 #15 October 12, 2004 QuoteI guess it's a generational thing.....If you don't know why he was so special, you simply grew up in a different time. The guy was a freekin' superstar. Ditto that, I used to watch his show every time it came on,same with Mutual of Omaha. I made a "like jim wrestling with the anaconda" reference in another thread and only a very few understood that one. Once apon a time kiddies, before there was 500+ channels, we actually had some good tv programing that was entertaining and educational. Jacque was literally the king of the sea back then. It was like seeing pictures of another world that no one else had seen(because most hadn't). His sons followed in his foot steps but 1 was eaten while filming mating habits of hammer heads in the mouth of the Chagris river in Panama. Knowing that, I always dreaded having to swim the Chagris river at night. His other son has developed some pretty neat submarines used for research. I find it hard to believe you can't find anything on him on the net.
