Do you fear spiders more than terrorists?

I didn't say I was right -- you didn't ask which was reasonable. I have a visceral reaction to spiders, especially large, fast-moving, or jumping ones.

Oh yeah, me too. I wasn't picking on you with that answer.

This first photo, attached, should freak you out. I found this cute little fellow in a canyon in north Texas. I've heard that they can wiggle their butts and "shoot" the hairs off their body into the eyes of a threatening beast. So I was really focused getting this close for a picture with him...

The second photo was easy - that's just the toes of my boot getting close.

Sights like these are a good reason for not sleeping in the open while camping out.

That, and rattlesnakes...

Photo #3 is a close-encounter I had on a hike just a few months ago. He was well camoflauged in the edge of a bush, and started rattling as I walked by. My brain took a split-second to recognize what the sound was, and then I just about jumped out of my pants. The sound is actually more of a "hissing" noise than a rattle.

I was paranoid of rattlers for days after this close call. Climbing up a canyon I heard a noise, and ran back down away from it, only to realize it was just some bees buzzing. And then another time my camera made a funny buzzing noise as it extended it's lens, which it doesn't normally do, and I interpreted that as a rattler too. Man, I was jumpy!

I HATE spiders. I would NOT be that close to either of those.

I've been trying to get up the nerve to let one crawl onto my hand. Their bite is supposed to be painful, but won't make you sick or kill you. But everytime I get my hand close, they kind of raise up their front two legs, reminding me of a snake with fangs getting ready to strike. And that makes me change my mind real quick.

In such a (purely hypothetical) scenario, the changing of my mind would be obvious by the smell of urine, the sound of me screaming like an 8 year old girl, and the sight of me running away much faster than you think a fat man is capable of. :$

People, as a group, frequently fear the wrong things.

You are more likely to die from drunk drivers on the freeway than either spiders or terrorists.

Well, quade, I fear spiders. It's more of a profound phobia of spiders and other critters. I don't like them - not one bit, and get the willies just thinking about it.

Terrorists? No use really fearing that. Drunk drivers? YEah. But I'll tell you, I encounter mroe spiders than either, and I'm scared to freaking kill them.[:/]

My parents live in NW Texas and they have lots of Black Widows and Brown and they can kill(we have them hear too).......Most people can survive a BW bite and some can a Brown. They also have a Scorpion problem.....Those fuckers really hurt and they keep biting!

Terrorism only came second on the list of respondents' top ten fears.

"It's not surprising that terrorist attacks came only second to creepy crawlies,"

is it just me or are these words at odds with the attachment? to me it looks like only 19% fear spiders most while 24% fear terrorists... am i missing something here?

meanwhile, i had a dream last night that a massive black hairy spider crawled up my arm. i woke up so fast and jumped out of bed. scary freaking dream. i hate spiders!

What about giant alien spiders abducting you? :o

Oh my god! That is the scariest thing I can think of! :o I'm scared now. Gotta go close and lock my windows.

NOOOOOOO! That's where they get you. They wait just outside, and when you come to the window to check ...they strike!

That, and rattlesnakes...

Yesterday the tracking dive people were not really watching where they're going and end up about 2 or 3 miles off. :SB|[:/]>:(:o

Anyways, I was part of the rescue team (lucky this wasn't the sunset load!) and we heard rattlesnakes AND saw big spiders.

S-C-A-R-Y-!!!

BTW, one of the guys had a huge alergical reaction - we took him to the hospital as his lips were approaching Angelina Jolie's in volume, and his eyes were being shut by being swollen. Lucky thing he didn't have to endure that for a long time before being found...

And just imagine if the aliens abducted you, subjected you to spider-bite tests, and then their craft was shot down by terrorists with RPGs while you were in it!! :o

Spiders are creepy, yeah. I was in camp upstate NY one summer, tromping through the woods with a friend, and we came to where the creek went under the main road... a stone arched tunnel about oh...40 feet to the other side. We could see a good way into the tunnel, and although I don't know what kind of spiders were in there, we saw, layered down into the tunnel, spider web after spider web. They were easily 5 - 6 feet across, and in the center of each one was a spider with a body nearly the size of a Christmas light bulb. With the legs, about 3 - 4 inches wide! :o Scared the living shit out of us. We saw DOZENS of them down into that tunnel! Needless to say, we climbed the embankment to avoid it, and went down the other side to resume following the creek.

But I think I fear mosquitos more. I never heard of someone getting a deadly disease like encephalitis from a spider. Yes, some spiders can kill, but usually only susceptible people with allergic responses. Not so with mosquitos. And I am not very convinced that mosquitos can't or don't carrry HIV. Is anyone aware of proof that they don't, and can post?

"Do you fear spiders more than terrorists?"

Me? Nope spiders are relatively easy to catch.;)

The little (and some quite big ) beady eyed beasties are all making ther way indoors round where I live, I regularly chuck 3 or 4 of them back into the garden each evening.

I have a perspex spider catcher thing, visualise a funnel on a stick with a sliding trap door.
The wee fella loves getting up close to them when they are trapped like this.

Spiders are a very real and credible threat! One time, I was driving and the H-U-G-E bugger was crawling along the windshield. I thought it was outside where I would be safe, but NO. It stops right in front of me and starts dropping down a web towards my lap. It was horrible...started coming closer and swinging from side to side. I had to swerve the car to the side of the road and jump out and spend the next 10 minutes trying to get it out of the car.

Roaches are another part of the "axis of evil". Nasty little things.

At least the terrorists can't spin webs out of their butts. *shudder*
;)

Hmmm, considering you live in south florida, how do you feel about Palmetto bugs?

For those not familiar with these guys:

The Palmetto Bug

One of the group commonly referred to as "Palmetto Bugs", the American roach is the largest (1-3/8" to 2-1/8") of the roaches infesting homes. It has reddish brown wings and is a good flyer. (yep, a huge, flying roach ) [:/] American roaches often invade from sewer systems and heavily mulched areas. The female attaches the egg capsule, containing 15-18 eggs, in high areas in garages, closets, utility rooms and fireplaces. Found nearly anywhere in the house, American roaches contaminate food, carry disease, damage book bindings, fabrics and wallpaper.
