Computer Wuffo

Ok so I admit it, I am a puter wuffo, an I do'nt care who knows it.

So for all you computer experts, I have a question?

Is downloading Realplayer safe?

A friend of mine told me that GATTOR was the owner of Realplayer an if I down load it
I'm in for a load of problems with SPYWARE, an whole bunch of other nasty stuff

Is he Right?

Lots of different definitions of safe there. I hate Realplayer personally. Their codec (the compression algorythm for the video) sucks and is lossy (big file for low clarity). IN addition to that, their player is ad-ware fueled. So, I don't know about the whole gator idea or spyware, but I would recommend against even without considering those. I have gone years without it, will never install it, and have not missed much without.
Anyone that really knows much about video will not use real as their only codec.

I'd also skip RealPlayer if possible... it likes to "call home" everytime you use it. Personally I don't like that "feature". I have it on some of my computers but remove the auto-start "feature" from the registry manually.

Ok thats two negatives ,I really want to see the Lutz video an I've down loaded it but can't convert it to AVI or MPEG
Can anyone suggest A program that can convert it to another format.

You can always install it, watch the video, and then uninstall it... the only reason I have it on this computer was so I could watch that moron Lutz...

ugh realplayer
I only use WMP, divx or quicktime. actually i think those are the only movie playing programs i have on my computer but 98% of the time it's wmp

hmm, that program was able to convert it, but it requires realplayer be installed , butchers the audio/video syncing , and prints a gigantic watermark over the video

Ok thanks for your help, I'm going to make a backup of REGEDIT an SYSTEM32
install Real player watch the video, see if I can save it in another format

Delete Real player, Then Delete the regestry an system32 an restore from backup

Sound ok?

I might be a little late but it is better to do a "full" backup with the "system state" than trying to swag it manually... that way you KNOW you can restore safely to a predetermined state... you can also turn on "System Restore" but I never trust that feature to "go it alone" without a full backup to disk or tape.

No problem installing/using RealPlayer, just select CUSTOM and do not install the Download manager and all that bullshit, JUST THE PLAYER, works fine.
