Need Help! Canopy and Container sizing.

Recommended Posts

I bought a Mirage G3 M1. After doing some research i found myself with more questions than answers. I check out the sizing chart on the Mirage web site and that was helpful but I wanted to know what is the largest canopy I can safely fit in my container. What would be better a 7 or 9 cell ? This is obviously my first container so can someone help?

The largest ones listed on the manufacturer's website. In your case, that looks like a Triathlon or Spectre 150 main and a Smart 150, Optimum 160 or PD143R reserve. You might be able to put a larger main in it if you go with a smaller reserve, but you won't like packing it and if you need a larger main having a smaller reserve isn't the safest choice.

Not trying to sound snarky, but it makes a whole lot more sense to do this kind of research BEFORE you spend your money instead of after...

From the site, looks like a 150sf 7 cell canopy is largest optimal for the M1. A PD Pulse or zpX fabric canopy from Aerodyne might get one size larger in the container since these canopies have a smaller pack volume due to the thinner fabric.

Bigger question. Why did you buy a container and then try to fit a maxed out volume canopy instead of choosing the correctly sized canopies for your experience and get the container sized to hold them?

edit: Looks like Lisa answered quicker.

I was looking at a safire 149 and didnt know if I would have problems with the fit.

Depends. If it's an original Safire (not a Safire 2) it probably would fit. The original Safires were measured differently than other canopies; a Safire 149 is about the same actual size as a 135 sq ft PD product.

Which is great if you are capable of safely flying and landing a 135. Not so great if you aren't.
