peacefuljeffrey 0 #1 October 16, 2004 OMG! Tonight I went flying solo for my night currency (3 takeoffs and landings in 90 days in order to be able to fly passengers day/night). I did the landings at Lantana (home airport), then flew to Boca to do a landing at a towered (class D) airport, just for the hell of it. On the way back home I headed northwest to the edge of the Everglades to do a few 360s. I was about to roll into a left 360 when all of the sudden, flashing before my eyes in the swath of the landing light, which I left on for visibility, was a splash of movement!! For the first instant, I had the momentary impression of the explosion of a big firework. In another instant, I realized that it was a flock of fifteen, maybe twenty large birds, arranged like a shotgun blast, but I have no idea what kind. Maybe herons or eagrets. They went right over the top of me, man, with an altitude difference of maybe 50- 100 feet! Freaked me out for a second, and I was sure glad I had had that landing light on! It's old wisdom I was handed down from my dad, a pilot too: birds will avoid and fly around the light. Yayyy! Blue skies, -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind...
