Jib 0 #1 October 7, 2004 I've been bribed with free car, 1/2 hotel and air into going to New Orleans tomorrow for the weekend. 2fat2fly 0 #2 October 7, 2004 Don't worry about trouble-you gotta do Cafe du monde for coffee and and that cakey thing that starts with "B" that I can't spell. Acme oyster house, but not the one on the quarter, and I liked CopelandsI am not the man. But the man knows my name...and he's worried
Opie 0 #3 October 7, 2004 Trouble in New Orleans??????? What could possibly go wrong Once you've had enough of Bourbon ST. I'd catch a cab and go down to Frenchmen ST. Just a handful of bars there in a small area with mostly locals. Go on Fri. night and catch this http://www.jazzvipers.com/ band between 10-2am. Just a different area to check out if you want to get off Bourbon ST. I'd also hit this http://www.emerils.com/restaurants/nola/index.htm place in the Qtr for some good food. elizfowler 0 #4 October 7, 2004 Definitely have a great cup of coffee (made with chickory added) and some nice warm biengets (bin-yays) at Cafe DuMonde.... You can have great Lobster Ettoufee at the Court of Two Sisters or a nice brunch of Eggs Benedict at Brennan's (where that dish was created).... Actually half the fun includes going into some off the beaten path places for anything from wonderful Big Easy treats like a big serving of crawfish (served right on brown paper or newspapers atop your table or a tasty Muffaletta (a yummy sub/poboy type sandwich). Just have a great time, stay cool and safe....don't spend all your money in the "dance clubs" (unless you want to!)..... Tell us how it was when you get back! Acensky 0 #7 October 7, 2004 There is the Hard Rock Cafe, and the Haunted History tours if you are into that kind of stuff. The zoo is pretty cool and so is the Aquarium. Gambling at the Casino don't remember the name of it but is just outside of French Quarter. Have fun !!Garbage bags do not make good parachutes. Dagny 0 #8 October 7, 2004 For the best muffuletta ever, make a visit to Central Grocery on decatur. Ask anyone if you can't find it. Get one, trust me. Eat it now, pack it for later, it's all good. Oh, and if you like mushrooms try their marinated mushrooms. Just yummy! (Oh, so you know, this is a grocery, not a restaurant. I like to get the Muffuletta and then park myself somewhere to people watch and eat) Cafe du monde (also on Decatur) is a necessity for cafe-au-lait and beignets. They're good, damn good! For a kick-ass poboy, go to Mother's restaurant (401 Poydras). Try the roast beef debris po-boy, you won't regret it. Be sure to grab a few extra napkins, though, it's a sloppy one! Of course, if you're drinking...try a hurricane, you can't beat the ambience of Pat O' Briens on St. Peter. Pat O's For some good cajun food, try Mulate's Cajun Restaurant at 201 Julia Street. They play a lot of zydeco music, too, so it has a good atmosphere. Mulate's Or you could try a very popular cajun restaurant called Cafe Maspero. It's at 601 Decatur. There are lines at high traffic times, but it's definitely worth the wait. My last suggestion is to try some local beer while you're there. My favorite is Abita beer. For something a little different, try Abita's Purple Haze. Abita beer Anyway, enjoy your trip. The places I listed are popular local and tourist hot spots with really good food in a casual atmosphere. Have fun!Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali

I soooooooooooo need to go back one of these days! This thread is making me hungry. Not food related, but if you're into that sort of thing, I took a cemetary tour from the Voodoo museum. It was fascinating- got a lot of local history and took a walk through the big cemetary. And this IS food related. I don't know if they still do it, but I took a half day cooking class also- learned how to make gumbo, jambalaya and bread pudding. Never got the hang of the pralines, although I still have the recipe! That was offered through a cooking supply store (the New Orleans equivalent of a Williams Sonoma?) near the waterfront if I'm not mistaken. It was a while ago, but it was a surprisingly fun thing to do! (And we got a good meal out of it too!) Oh, and take a street car through the garden district! We also went to the aquarium- that was great! And we did a bayou tour as well. Wow, I really need to go back!
