kinney29 0 #2 October 18, 2004 Nice! I've seen it happen accidently. A static line student held on to long and the wind grabbed the static line. The chute opened wrapped around the tail of the air plane and actually tore off part of the plane.
dixieskydiver 0 #3 October 18, 2004 We had a better one than that at our dropzone. Guy got towed for a good 15 minutes because the instructor didn't have a knife and there wasn't one in the plane. It's on video, but it isn't on the internet. He broke off a metal bracket from a seat and used it to saw through the static line. It was a pretty impressive effort. It's hard to tell if the guy pulled his reserve and that caused the nearly cut static line to break or if the static line broke and the guy was really quick on the reserve. If it were the former it could have turned out very bad for the intstructor and pilot still in the plane. chuckbrown 0 #4 October 18, 2004 That looks like a stunt. Static line chutes don't have pilot chutes (nor do reserves). And the distance he was trailing behind the plane was greater than the bridle length. Still, looked like a wild ride. Nice video. Edited to add: Hooknswoop informed me of the distinction between direct bag & PCA static lines. Thanks, Hook. Dixieflyer, you know what I meant. But thanks anyway. dixieskydiver 0 #5 October 18, 2004 Actually direct bag static lines don't have pilot chutes. We pack some of ours as "static line assisted" pilot chutes. The static line has a normal pin on it instead of the cord and there is a spring loaded pilot chute inside. flyingferret 0 #6 October 18, 2004 Yes, it could be PCA, but looking at the length and the landing area (maybe an airshow?) I think it is a stunt. I have heard about it before, and had a previous DZO agree to let me do it with a rappelling harness and 50' rope. Then he sold the dz.....oh well. I think it would be cool sometime. Or you could jsut do this: http://www.flightjournal.com/articles/skyhook/skyhook.asp-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. livendive 8 #7 October 18, 2004 QuoteThat looks like a stunt. You are correct that it appears to have been a stunt, for several reasons (presence of a pilot chute not being one of them). Blues, Dave The pilot chute doesn't appear to be spring loaded in the video. Also there was a delay between release of the line and the deployment of the parachute which is obviously a main due to the pc, thus eliminating the line from being a static line as it didn't serve the function of deploying the main. That pretty much eliminates all options other than a stunt. A fun looking one at that Dixie HISPA #56 Facil Rodriguez "Scientific research has shown that 60% of the time, it works every time."
