prepheckt 0 #1 October 20, 2004 Well it's my first day on the job here in the Chair Force...and I am sitting here bored out of my mind, with nothing to do....I work in the Wing commander's office...(essentially the CEO of the base). I work for the exec...so they give me my first task (FINALLY! I've been here since 7:30) Here's the exchange between my boss and me. Her: I have a project for you. Me: Okay (waiting patiently) Her: Can you type? (Incredulous look on my face) Me: Of course (Me thinking what a stupid question) Her: I need you to type these four names on these envelopes. Here's where the generation gap really starts to show Me: What program do I use to type these (I'm thinking I need a template on MS Word of some kind to to print on the envelopes Her: None. (I'm confused at this point) At this point it dawns on me, she wants me to use a typewriter....okay...no problem, shouldn't be that hard. Not like it's rocket science...well I got a A in that class....so all good. I go to the typewriter and flip switches till lights come on, but can't figure out where to stick the envelopes, so I have to go find a major next door who knows how to use the thing. Me: Sir, could you give me a hand for a sec? Him: What's up? Me: Can you show me how to use the typewriter? Him: Oh, they don't show anyone how to use those anymore do they? (Look of sadness as he realizes how old he's gotten) Me: No they don't (look of pity) I just thought this was funny to me....."Dancing Argentine Tango is like doing calculus with your feet." -9 toes
Slappie 9 #2 October 20, 2004 Sounds like me when I first got here. They (the company) used to hand type all the forms. Only computer they had was an old 486 that held the consignee database. I'm so glad we actually got into the 90's a couple years ago. They issued us all refurbed pIII 866's !! Wahoo! I still have to fumble with the typerwriter when doing Hazardous Declaration for Air. Usually takes me about 5 forms until I can actually get one typed without mistakes. EdC 0 #6 October 20, 2004 Getting old sucks. My freshman typing class in high school was on manual typewriters, of course that was 1984. Big Ed
