Is it like riding a bike?

Recommended Posts

I was going to keep it a secret. I am planning on getting recurrent before or at Chick's Rock. I just feel so lazy about doing my recurrency jump. I know that I want to fly, but I'm embarrassed that I'll be rusty. Not to mention the fact that I have no main and need a repack, so I will either be renting a big rig or borrowing...for the boogie weekend. I would go jump during the week, but we have poopy weather until Thursday. It's making me feel wishy-washy about the whole thing, but I know that once I do my first jump back...it will be heaven.

I am not planning on jumping my new wingsuit or anything tricky. I will keep to jumps that I feel comfortable with...RW with Elsi LOs and coach friends.

Anyway, I don't know if I am asking for encouragement or venting or what. I guess that I just feel weird that so much time has passed with me not jumping (about 4 1/2 months). I am not sure what to expect mentally, emotionally and physically. I think that I feel a little anxious. I was not expecting that.

I hope to see many of the DZ.com chickies and guys out at Elsinore for the weekend. I will jump as much as I can. I just may be rusty after so much time without any exercise or airtime, but I will do my best. :)
Anyone want to share their recurrency stories?

Yep, it'slike riding a bike.

You'll probably be a little rusty, but you'll get it back in a few jumps.

You'll probably be a little scared on that first one, too. I know I was. But then you'll land and it will be like you never stopped.

I can't wait to jump with you this weekend!

I've gone uncurrent once, and it was during my student progression. (midwestern winter) I wouldn't recommend it, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Take it slow, have fun, and make sure you pick up your gear-checking/handle touching habits again and you'll be fine.

I'm from the midwest, so a 4 + month layoff is pretty normal. I don't get to jump much between November and May! (March is usually crappy and April is windy, don't get me started and December, January and February!)

I went 8 months after my broken ankle last year, partly the weather, but mostly, my ankle just wasn't ready. The first jump back was a little scary for me, but I sucked it up and made myself do it. I chose a small, simple, low pressure 4 way with friends. I jumped my own canopy and stood up the landing, so the canopy control course helped me after all! I can't even begin to tell you how good it felt to make that jump and everything I went through beforehand.

You'll be fine!

I feel like throwing up just thinking about it. WTH? I think it's mostly performance anxiety...since I have to do a coached recurrency jump.

Oh Andi, I am definitely looking forward to jumping with you, again. The last time that we've jumped together was Eloy. Of course, I've been in the tunnel when you've been in the tunnel training with your team, but we'll finally be able to fun jump! :)

Rosa, I have a few suggestion for you.

Do you only have your A license? The reason I ask, is because of what the BSR say about recurrence jumps for the different license holders.

-Contact the DZ and find out what they are going to want you to do for your first jump back. I can't image them making you do the whole recurrent thing, since they know you and know what level of skydiving you were performing at before your accident.

-Get your reserve repack before the weekend. You will be more comfortable jumping your own rig. You know where those handles are located at.

-Borrow a main that you feel comfortable jumping and get it in your rig. Ask friends or the gear shop if they have a demo.

-Landings are what's going to freak you out the most, afterall; that's how you got hurt. Be aggressive with your piloting of your canopy and flare. But also be ready to PLF.

-After a few jumps you'll be were you where before your break.

Good luck and have fun.

You're awesome, Kris...but you've seen my rig right? It is huge on me, but it cannot hold anything bigger than a 150. I will be getting repacked, and I will first jump a 170, then a 150 for the weekend, I think. (If all goes well, or I may even go back to a 150 depending on how it goes.) I WAS jumping a 135 with about 12-15 lbs of lead at my weight (97 lbs or so), but I am not going back to that for quite a while.

I'll see you there, right? :)

Riding a bike ? I broke my shoulder riding a defective bike remember ?;) Ha.
Just do a solo from full altitude , you'll be fine. Hit the pea pit for a softer landing and to prove you still got it. Yea it seems weird at first, but you'll know why you are there once you have a safe landing etc. It feels really good to be back in the saddle again.
YAY!

Cool...the weird part is that I am not really scared of landing. I am scared and anxious that my flying has turned to total poop...after all that work.

I was asked to do some RW in the tunnel this week by someone whom I respect (Elsi LO) and who knows that I've been out for over 4.5 months. I am really nervous/sick about that, too, (performance anxiety) I don't want to ruin it for everyone. I am sure that it will be soooo much fun, though!

I've had to come back from 3 injuries so far. Each time I told myself it would be no big deal to get back into the air, but each time I was as nervous as I was on my first solo. The thought of how much the last jump hurt me and how painful the last few months had been were the only thing I could think about on the way up in the plane on those first jumps back, not how much I enjoyed skydiving. I thought I would puke!

To get over those first-jump-back-jitters, you really just have to make yourself do it. Do not hem and haw about it this week about whether you are going to go back or not. Pick a day and get all your gear ready and don't let yourself back down. If I were you, I would do a hop-n-pop on my first jump back. It's not the freefall you're freaked out about, it's the landing, right? If you do a hop-n-pop you can have the landing area all to yourself and the entire jump will be all about the canopy ride and you won't be distracted by anything else.

I would also consider not making my first jump back at a boogie, but that's just my humble opinion. I'm glad you're healed and ready to go! :)

Who cares what your flying is like (as long as you're safe)? You're not going into a competition trying to turn 20 points in time - you're going to a boogie!

You'll spend more time thinking up silly exits and drinking tequila and taking/starring in embarassing photos that'll end up posted here :P

Yes, that's what I want to do. The problem is that it's raining until Thursday! Ugh...I would have gone today if the weather was not so crappy...

I'm worried about my skills being rusty. It's stupid...I know. I mean, of course I can fly fine, but will I be able to do skillwise what I was doing just prior to my injury...no. I will be flying a huge canopy, so my landings should be fine.

I wasn't going to wait until the weekend. I am going to try to jump on Thursday or Friday when there will still be less people. Saturday, I will jump if I feel ok with it mentally. It's my home DZ with my friends, so I am sure that it will be ok. I went to my first boogie at Elsinore last year at 20 jumps, just after meeting the "A" license requirements, and I was fine with it. :)
Edited for typo, AGAIN!!! :S

Definitely!!! We will jump together, sweetie. Alana, your PMs and my other female friends who sent me PMs wanting to jump at Chick's Rock are what inspired me to go for it & get recurrent before this weekend. I love you girls...and the guys, too, of course! :)
Also, to everyone who sent a PM so far, you are all the best! I am so excited to fly with you all...and I'm truly looking forward to flying with my Elsi and Perris girls asap. B|

I may need a table dancing partner...;) Omg Darcy, I've missed you so much. I cannot believe that we both have moved, and both have had so many changes in the few months that we haven't seen each other. I can hardly wait to see you & fly with you...B|

What great news Rosa!! I'm so happy I'll get to jump with you after all.

I'm sure you will do just fine, but maybe we can jump together while you're still a little rusty so I won't feel so intimidated :$ ;).

See you this weekend!
