Did I get this right? (network computer question)

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if sombody with more knowlege of netmasks, ip, and hosts could check this for me...

Quote

Exercise 3 (10pts)
Consider the following IP information: 205.37.193.227 with netmask 255.255.255.128.

Part (a) What does the “255.255.255.128” translate to, in terms of the netmask length?

a> net mask length of 25, 11111111 11111111 11111111 10000000

Part (b) How many bits are left over for defining host numbers, and how many possible hosts does that imply?

a> That leaves 7 bits left over and implies 127 possible hosts

Part (c) What is the particular host number corresponding to 205.37.193.227?

a> 255.255.255.128

Thanks:)

that is the biggest one I had a question with. I cannot find in lecture notes when he talked about anything like that except for:

a class C ip =192.22.22.0 would have a net mask 255.255.255.0

I'm pretty sure the 255.255.255. is right, It is the last three that i am not sure how they are correlated.

I would think that the host would be .227.

But it does seem that we are missing some information here.

this is all the information that we got:S

And this prof thinks we don't need a book cause all the information is in his powerpoint slides:|

thanks I'll check on the 227

Part a is correct.

Part b tricked you, just like they hoped for. There will only be 126 possible hosts.

205.37.193.128
205.37.193.255

are reserved for network address and broadcast address (respectively).

Part c
EDIT: damn, Wild blue got me. Host number is def 99.

See what happens when you dont use it ;)

If the netmask was 255.255.255.0 you'd be correct. Remember, 1 bit in that number is now used for the network id though.

Anyone want to learn about ANDing? :D It's been awhile since I've had to explain all of that!

This might help http://www.gtoal.com/subnet.html

Also, I recomment any Cisco prep books by Todd Lammle. He has a method that will have you subnetting in your head after the chapter. He explains the binary (M$) way and then defines some rules to remember that are always true because the nature of the binary. Then you use those rules to determine the hature of the subnet without actually doing the binary conversion. I am sure there are similar methods, I just learned his first and loved it.

My dept went to a really excellent Cisco course last year and one of the things the instructor taught us was how to calculate subnets in our heads after just 30-minutes of going over it with us. (really great instructor, btw...)

It kinda freaks out the geeks in the other departments when we do it for them because we haven't told them our secret. They just kind of give us that "Rainman" look.>:(

thanks for the link... most helpful

That is a good link - keep it handy. That's almost exactly how I used to teach it actually :)
And pasting this, in case you didn't see it from my earlier post:

and for c, I think he wants "99"

oopsie, yeah, the people sell some pretty explicit shirts.

Basically it says "Talk nerdy to me" white on black background.

I also have one with "SELECT * FROM USERS WHERE CLUE > 0"

And one in binary that converts to "You are dumb"

Ok, I am a geek. oh yeah... I have one that says
