Stairway to Heaven

Recommended Posts

i just learnt how to finally play the solo for the song.
i love it! if you ever go to a music store you'll either hear people playing stairway, house of the rising sun or enter sandman on guitar. I guess those are just popular "guitar doodle" songs.
I like to go into the music stop here and just rip it up with some heavy fast riffs and crazy solos...show all those people up.

but back to the original post...i love that song.

I went through a very long period (late '70's - mid '90's) where I didn't want to hear it anymore, but it's still a fine song.

After years of avoiding Zeppelin music I bought a "best of" CD in 1994 and listened, with headphones, as though I was hearing it for the first time. Yes, it's fine stuff. In small doses.

Recently we were doing a song in the church band that used the repeating Am - G - F chord phrase. Just for kicks (during Sunday service, no less) I strummed the "F" chord using the same staccato rythm J. Page plays following the line "...and as we wind on down the road..." before returning to the Am chord. Everyone older than 30 knew full well what I was doing. The keyboard player looked at me, stunned, before breaking into a wide grin. Meanwhile, the other guitar player ripped into a brief, sizzling lead line...

This is not your grandmother's church!

Last year I came up with an adaptation of "Rock 'n' Roll" that I could play well enough to perform solo in front of people. Damn Page - it's a basic three-chord song that took me nearly 30 years to figure out!

Cheers,
Jon

And don't forget "Smoke on the Water". ;) I thought that was the required introduction to power chords for anyone learning to play the guitar... (or am I just old?)

I once knew how to play Stairway, but I haven't played it in so long that I've forgotten... I think it's still a good song though. Even though Zeppelin IV is overplayed, it's still one of my favorite albums.

Hmm, now you have me looking up Zeppelin tablature! "Made up my mind to make a new start, Going to California with an achin' in my heart." :)

That's funny... You just reminded me of the Simpsons episode where they're singing "Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida" in church. :D

Ha ha... Kirk Hammet was probably my biggest inspiration for learning to play the guitar - and part of the reason I chose to learn classical. But... I had a chance to meet him when I was 17 and I was all excited because I sort of idolized him... So I meet him, and we did talk about music for a bit, but then he just starts hitting on me (I guess in my admiration I had overlooked the fact that he is a dude)... then I ask him if he is married and he says, "Let's put it this way... My wife is married, but I'm not." with a little wink.

Anyhow, after that, it was hard to listen to Metallica anymore without thinking about what a jerk he is... but I didn't like the direction they went with their music anyway; they really lost me with that sandman song. :P I thought "Kill 'em All" and "Master of Puppets" were their best albums (but I haven't listened to any of their more recent stuff). I do sort of want to see that documentary they just put out though...

Try to find this CD " Pickin On"
an all instrumental bluegrass version of Led Zeppelin.(two cd set)
There are other bands as well..It is great!
There may be a website..pickin on' for these CD.

Oh man, I just looked it up on Amazon... and it suggested to me that I might also like A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC... so I am listening to the samples, and it has me in tears - that's some funny shit (if you like AC/DC). :D

It also suggested Fade to Bluegrass: Tribute to Metallica which sounds pretty good too.

And I listened to the samples of Pickin On Zeppelin (that you suggested)... very cool. "No Quarter" and "Battle of Evermore" sound particularly good bluegrass-style. B|

Went to a Bluegrass Festival over Labor Day weekend. Some of the jammers there were playing Police. Weird, just plain weird. But it sounded good. Never thought of their music as Dobro , 5 String Banjo and Fiddle friendly. But it is

Hmm, the Police would make for interesting bluegrass music... I'm trying to imagine how "Don't Stand So Close to Me" would sound... (my favorite Police song)

The Austin Lounge Lizards do a cool bluegrass version of "Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd.
