Video game piracy: helping the companies that produce them?

Recommended Posts

So there was an interesting conversation between a friend of mine and I.

we were discussing Halo 2 and how a french version of it was released (on the internet) about a month before the game was scheduled to be released.

Understandably, the company is rather upset by the incident and is launching some sort of a search to fine the people that have been downloading? (which, in my opinion, will yield close to nothing, especially because they post, on the internet, how they plan on going about doing this)

anyway, my friend and I were discussing it and we were tossing around a rather interesting idea. If a game is really good, any gamer will go and purchase it off the shelf, regardless of if he has the pirated , fully functional version or crappy download. That's just how it works. Which means that companies have to make their games really, really good in order to make any substantial prophet.

Beyond that, if a gamer downloads the game and starts telling all his friends what a great game it is, their friends will want to play it and then go out and buy it as well.

the idea was that Piracy Keeps the gaming companies on their toes, and helps spread reviews of games, ultimately, putting the ball of prophet of a producer's game, in their court.

just a thought w/ many down and upsides.

what do you guys think?

The gaming companies can get all of that without piracy - they send free copies to all the gaming magazines to write reviews on, and of course have their beta testing kiddies that spread news quickly. But there is a code that goes along with that - you don't share the game because increased profits from sales ensure a future addition to the game.

In my opinion the "piracy" term is being sometimes misused, so, downloading a yet to be released or already released version of a game or movie, etc I consider that a "sneak peek", now, if you alter and sell that product THEN is piracy, but of course, there are many interpretations to this issue.

In this case, if I DL a game from the net and the game really kick ass, I'll buy the retail version, same goes for movies or software, etc.

good thought.

You have to admit, however, that a game review from a good friend is far more likely to convince you than one from a magazine.

the other part was that if someone doesn't create a really great game, people have already played it, andn will not buy it. meaning companies have to live up and surpass the audience's expectations.

personally, there's no way I'd buy a game unless I played the full version

Similar to what Ivan said, here is my belief....

Some people call it theft, or loss of profits (this goes for all software, not just games, and including MP3's.) However, if I NEVER intended to purchase the game to begin with, how is it considered theft ? It WOULD be theft, if I turned around and SOLD it to others or made any type of profit from distribution of the game. But if I never inteded to buy it in the first place, how can they consider it a loss ?? go figure.

However, I am of the belief of Try Before You Buy. Having said that I have a legal copy of HL, Doom x series, Quake x series, Wolf3d, UT series, and a few others. All others, I downloaded or copied, played for a bit, tried 'em out, then deleted from my pc cause they were crap.

Like the first poster said, if the game company delivers a really really really good game, I will buy it because I think they deserve it. However, most of the other games out there are just plain CRAP and by me not buying it, along with thousands of others, hopefully we're sending a message to the game developers to build a better game.

Yup...I've downloaded games to try and if I like them, I buy them. In the last year I've bought the latest UT, Doom3, Sims2, FS 2004, X-Plane, GTA-Vice City, and Need For Speed: Underground.

All because I tryed before I bought. If I downloaded something and didn't like it, it got deleted off of my drive after one or two plays.
