Good MP3 player for under $200

Recommended Posts

The wife has been wanting a MP3 player for a while now. I just realized that it takes 20 minutes plus to get to altitude so a MP3 player would be a good time waster and something to pump me up enroute to "target altitude" With all that said I am looking for a reliable MP3 player for under $200. It needs to be able to go up to 14k, fit in the zippered thigh pouch in my jumpsuit, hold a couple hours music, and able to play files downloaded off Limewire. I had a RIO a couple years ago that would lock up if it had a corrupt file downloaded to it. You had to take the batteries out and reset the thing it was such a pain in the ass I took it back. What do you think? I have a best buy, curcuit city, and a comp usa in town I am gonna hit up tonight and get one.

Eh, I did the MP3 player in my helmet thing/ride to altitude thing for a while. Basically I realized how loud I had to have it so I could hear it...well, it couldn't be good for my ears. Especially since if I didn't turn it down on the ground, it really hurt my ears.

The Rio, MPIO, IRiver, Yepp etc...all good (those stores carry them), all have an FM tuner. Some can record from the radio, and some have voice recording. Up to 256mb under $200. The Rio can take SD cards up to 1.5mb, so that may be a better option. Another $100 and you can get an Ipod Mini or The Rio 5GB Jukebox.

If you want a review, just go to google and type in those words with "review" and you will find a bunch.

That crossed my mind, I thought that with my z1 fullface on that would quiet it down enough that I would not have to blare it loud. What kinda player did you have? Did it give you any troubles?

If you do a search on here, you will find this topic has been talked about many times. In the end the music can be a distraction, could prevent you from hearing directions from the pilot, keep your mind off the jump, damage your hearing, add more safety procedures in the plane and possibly in freefall. In short, too many negatives for a short list of positives.

Thanks I will look at the reviews, but I never have trusted them. All the reviews look and sound like someone from the company wrote them. I would rather hear from you guys. 256mb is good enough that would do me for the day.

Sites like IGN, Sharky, AnandTech, HardOCP, etc...they have decent reviews or link to good reviews. Also, sites under the ZD umbrella are pretty good as well. Also, check with Pricewatch.com to see if you can get them cheaper by ordering them online.

I just looked and for $235 you can get a 30gb Nomad.

I have an old skool MP3 player (old skool...heh, that's kinda funny) that I bought about 3 years ago. Its an Intel something something, 64mb of memory. Back then it was the hot shit, though, 64mb was the expensive models.

Good little MP3 player, although I don't really use it anymore, especially since that's a short list of music, 64mbs. I've been thinking about getting an Ipod, but I'm not real sure I'll use it all that often. Can't exactly plug it into the radio on my motorcycle, I mean geez, I don't ride a Goldwing.:P

Meh, get a poly-pro baclava from a military surplus store. Works like a champ.

It gets fairly cold here in Texas in the winter as well, I've jumped on days when it was 10F on the ground and in the negatives in the air, wore my baclava and it wasn't that bad. Of course you look like you're going to rob a gas station, but that's ok, you're warm.

Iriver, Iriver, Iriver

I have one and love it! I have the IFP-390, although they have newer and longer lasting battery life now: http://www.iriveramerica.com/products/flash.aspx

Reasons why I think it sets apart:
It is cheap; $150 or a lot less if you find a deal.
It has a mic for voice memos
It has a line in jack to rip an input directly to MP3 format.
It also plays WMA and OGG formats
They offer an alternate firmware, that allos the player to function as a USB mass sotrage device (memory key) This means you can just drag and drop files on AND OFF the player, rather than a rights management limited software.

I use mine on Harley and can hear it. The menu functionality is pretty good once you get used to it. With more buttons it would be easier to navigate, but of course bigger too. The thing is hardly bigger then the AA that powers it.
