Lots of time and money: where would you go?

Recommended Posts

So, since I've been sitting in my house for so long because I can't drive anywhere (well, I guess I could, I mean...who needs to look over their shoulders while driving anyways?) I've been putting more thought into where to go once I get three months severance.

Yes, Ivan, I know that this topic has been discussed before, but too darn bad!

Where would you go for a month or two? I may make a jump or two during the trip, but skydiving is about the bottom of my list of priorities on this trip. I don't have much experience backpacking, and I like showers. I'm thinking either New Zealand or a tour of Europe, but I just wanted to get some more ideas and suggestions.

Where in the world should Vallerina and possibly guest go?

hmmmmm.....
well, i have been to Afghanistan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Azerbaijan, Mexico, Panama, Turkey, and Canada. and before you ask, not in the military but on vacation (i always get asked if i went to Afghanistan in the military - NO i didnt i had a tourist visa and was there in September 2002).
so, how adventurous are you? i would HIGHLY recommend Cambodia and Afghanistan - the friendliest, most hospitable people on the planet. both are fairly dangerous places to be if you dont keep your wits about you, but if you do, they are awesome.
tame traveller? try Hong Kong, Thailand, or Mexico. Thailand and Mexico can be a little dicey at times, but still fairly safe. and they are very pretty if you can deal with the typical poverty and squalor that comes with travel to the 3rd world. if you need any info about any of these places feel free to PM me.

Hmmm. Lots of time and money? I'd have no choice but to take my wife to Europe, where she lived for years.

I'd also like to take my private jet (hey, you said lots of money) throughout the US and ski all winter in the better ski resorts.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Oh, Val, I've travelled quite a bit, for an American, and I loved Australia. Sydney is like a perfect version of San Francisco. Brisbane was European and very friendly, and the whole Cairnes area was like Santa Cruz, but prettier and with really big fucking spiders.

If you could pull off Oz and New Zealand, quit your job and do it. I travelled the whole East Coast of Oz with a couple Kiwis, and it really was just about the trip of my life.

The trip of my life was Italy. Rented a car, and drove from Rome, to Naples, up the Amalfi coast to Switzerland, through Milan and Venice and out through Milan again.

Romantically? Italy can not be beat. Fun? The Auzzies are the most fun, ever. In the universe.

The sunsets on the Amalfi Coast, in Italy, were the best. Just beautiful, and the food was so good.

The beer was better in Oz, though.

Tough choice.

You're young. Do both.

Sydney is lotsa fun. That's why I've been stuck here for about a year :P.

Lots of time and money? Rent a camper-van and spend three to four months driving around Australia.

Thailand is nice, but not world-beating, in my not-so-humble opinion. I know many folk that have spent about three months backpacking around SE Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, etc) and they loved it.

Backpacking 'round South America is pretty damn cool too.

However, if you want to blow all your money damn quick, you can't really beat a trip to Antarctica B|

Any place that doesn't depend tourism for it's economic well being.

Met a couple of hardcore travelers from New Zealand while in line to see the Edinburgh Castle this summer. They had just travelled from Egypt and HATED it in capital letters. Their 8 year old daughter had gotten headlice, they had all gotten food poisoning, and they found the atmosphere to be hostile to westerners.

Secondhand, but they were nice people and I thought I'd share. They were really bummed that they had put the money and effort into seeing the pyramids and stuff.

I have heard from many people that Egypt was awful

I've heard that from a few people, and I heard a few people say that it was fantastic. I've always wanted to go, though.

I'm thinking about doing that...except for doing it around New Zealand!

If you're planning on doing NZ, check out www.kiwiexperience.com. It's a tour company but they have tons of different routes on the North and South Island, just steal an idea from them on a route you'd like to take, get in the camper and rollB|

Similarly, they've got www.ozexperience.com and www.feejeeexperience.com

No, I don't work for them, but I've just browsed lots of travel sites for down here and they seem to have some pretty good trips put together. Enjoy!
