suicide attempts off bridges...

Recommended Posts

I still think that it is bullshit, and quite possibly one of the biggest waste of my tax dollar - preventing a suicide.

And to those who say wait until it is your friend, wife etc...
Been there....
No one has offered a reason why when they threaten to kill themself they get help, when we want to base jump...we go to jail.

Um, all right. Let's think about that.

Most states in the USA have a law against trespassing on their bridges. So, if caught, you will go to jail - or get a ticket. Generally you either get released soon thereafter on an Own Recognizance program, or a light bail amount.

However, when one is on a bridge looking to kill themselves, if the officers are successful in preventing them from jumping (and often they are not...), once the person is taken into custody, it is a mandatory 72 hours PET (Psychiatric evaluation team) assessment, into the local psychiatric hospital if there is one available or into jail in solitary if not...and only released after a psychiatrist deems them safe. Usually this means they get onto some meds, and it usually isn't just 72 hours (although that's mandatory, no bail or OR for them...). At times, they are also charged with the crime of trespassing, as well as other things.

So, you break the law BASEing, and you handle the fine, and walk away. A suicide attempt that gets saved breaks the law, gets an involuntary 72 hour (and longer) hold, and then also often gets charged with breaking the law.

Does that answer your question?
