happythoughts 0 #1 October 26, 2004 Golf Digest Carl lives! Caddyshack - The great golf documentary of its time. 200 years from now, people will be quoting it like King Lear. QuoteThe comparisons to "Caddyshack" are inevitable. Police in Kent, N.Y., responding to reports of gunfire at Sedgewood GC on the evening of Sept. 20, found a member of the course's maintenance crew, 36-year-old Christopher Lehan, roaming the fairways in a golf cart with a flashlight and 20-gauge shotgun. Lehan told officers Carlton Champagne and Sean Benson he was hunting for skunks who had taken up residence at Sedgewood. "The skunks damage the course, and he said he had shot a couple," Lt. Alex DiVernieri of the Kent police told The Journal News of Westchester, N.Y. "He didn't realize he needed a [hunting] license." After consulting with the Department of Environmental Conservation, police said they would charge Lehan with a variety of offenses, including hunting without a license, hunting out of season and possessing a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. A golf cart is a motor vehicle? Sure, but... c'mon, they are charging this guy with hunting from it. And what the heck is the "Department of Environmental Conservation" ? "What did you do at work today, honey?" "Conserved some skunks." A lot of cops will read this and think, "This is the biggest crime these guys can find to enforce?" Deuce 1 #2 October 26, 2004 Normally you don't need a license to hunt vermin. If the golf course was private property, I don't get it. Maybe a local code for discharging a firearm within city limits? As to having something better to do, I used to love getting that question! Q: Don't you have something better to do (than a speeding ticket or urinating in public offense or whatever)? A: Nope. You're the best thing I got going right now!
happythoughts 0 #3 October 26, 2004 I was living in an apartment in a nice area of Tampa. I made a decision to buy a house. While I was looking at houses, two things happened. 1. A buddy was told by his homeowners assoc that he had put in the wrong type of grass when replacing some. They sent him a notice with a time limit by which the grass problem had to be corrected. 2. The police dept had requested more funding because of the increase in crime in the area. The source of the "crime wave"? Speeding. The speed traps were removed after some powers-that-be got nabbed for "39 in a 35" (really). That is how I decided not to buy a house there. My current neighbors told me the rules are: 1. Don't let mean dogs run free. 2. Don't shoot in the back yard, walk to the end of the road. 3. Don't call the police, we can discuss any problems. There is also a really swanky golf course nearby where we distribute any raccoons that we live-trap. We feel that they eat better there.
