Things to do in SoCal?

Recommended Posts

My mom and stepdad are coming to stay with me for a few days in December, and I am looking for suggestions of things to do while they are here. (I live near Perris.) The last time they were here, I took them to the beach in Carlsbad, the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, LegoLand (my nephews were with them), and to Vegas.

What are some other good things to do out here? (probably nothing too adventurous)

And I've never been to Catalina or Coronado... Are either of those places good to visit in December?

You could take me to the beach.

You could take me to Disneyland.

You could take me to San Diego.

You could..... mhmmmmm. there seems to be a theme here....:P

Coronado - nice place to visit, some good restaraunts and bars along the strip. Peohe's is a great place (on the water) but expensive. Coronado Brewing Company is fun. You can go to McP's and watch the SEALs get drunk.

Other places in SD -

Torrey Pines Gliderport. Fun to watch the paragliders launch and the whales swim by.

Epazote's in Del Mar - best margaritas in San Diego.

Fidels, Solana Beach - best mexican food in San Diego.

Old Town - fun in a touristy way; some decent restaraunts and bars. Check out Coyote's for margaritas, and O'Henry's for their one-yard beers.

The Wine Sellar in Mira Mesa - hole in the wall but excellent restaraunt; very pricey though.

Pacific Beach - some good bars, the surfer part of town.

Catalina and Coronado can be good places to visit in December or hellish nightmares depending on how "bad" the weather is. You don't want to go to either if it's not a warm sunny day.

Yes, I think Catalina can be a fun outing with the parents. The last time that I went was for scuba diving, but I know that there is also a day tour (bused) of the island that they may enjoy.

I haven't been to Coronado, but I heard that it's nice.

My boyfriend lives in San Diego...Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach off the 8 west. It's a beautiful and friendly area. San Diego, in general, is just wonderful to visit.

THIS will give you more info about the Queen Mary. Your parents may enjoy a tour of the ship. It has great history. Also, on Sunday mornings, they have a fabulous champagne brunch on the Queen Mary in the Grand Salon. It is soo good. You can dress up (or not) and go with the parents. :)
The Getty is free and one of my favorite places to go. Just call to reserve a parking spot. The LACMA is also a good place to visit if they love art, as is the MOCA for modern art lovers. (This was where I first saw Cindy Sherman's work.)

THIS is a website that will show you opera and theatre events in LA. The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion is just beautiful for watching opera.

As for Disneyland with you and JP...that would be a blast! I used to go to Disneyland with my late best friend on her birthday every year.

You could go wine tasting in Temecula. It's not too far from Perris and they have quite a few wineries. Some have tours and some have restaurants attached where you could have lunch.

You might want to pick up a tour book from Auto Club. It's free to members and lists a lot of things to do in So Cal. If you are not a member let me know and I could get you one and send it to you, or bring it to the DZ.

I had to laugh at how many times you mentioned drinking in your reply... What, do you think I'm a lush or something??? :P

My mom mentioned something about Old Town, but I didn't know what that was... I'll check it out (and the other suggestions too). Thanks! :)

These suggestions all sound like something that I would like, and my mom would probably like them too, but I don't know about my stepdad. And now that I think about it, I think they specifically mentioned that they didn't want to go to LA.

But I'll bookmark these to check out some other time... :)

San Diego To Dos:

1) That boat from "Master and Commander" is now in the harbor and available for viewing (I'm not really into that but some peeps are).

2) Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is pretty nice but size is much smaller than most big cities.

3) If you have a dog, we have to GREAT dog beaches here (a) Del Mar - which is my favorite, and (b) Ocean Beach - cool but a lot bigger.

4) Old Town: shopping, eating and little history (torture for most men).

5) Sea World (if you haven't already been there its pretty fun but if you have been there - its still the same).

6) Quail Botanical Gardens (pretty cool in Dec because they decorate for the holiday).

7) Julian: small town with a mountain like atmosphere. Fun to go up for the day and just hike around. Don't forget the world famous homemade apple pie though.

8) Coronado: cool to drive around and wish you lived there. Some GREAT restuarants (i.e. Peyoe's) and uppity shopping. Historical Hotel Del is there (said to be haunted :o).

9) If you're step dad golfs, my hubby says Torrey Pines is WORLD CLASS. View is awesome, plenty of hiking trails down to Torrey Pines beach and park (which is REALLY cool).

10) Last but not least, TAKE THE COASTER DOWN!!! The ride is awesome and goes along the coast most of the way from San Juan Capistrano.

If you lookin for good SD food, my absolute favorite is "Jakes" in Del Mar. Water view, reasonable prices, great atmosphere and selection and yummy!!

Hope you have fun and find something to do.:)

We'll have to do a three-way with quade on that one. ;)

MOCA for modern art lovers. (This was where I first saw Cindy Sherman's work.)

THAT'S the movie I was trying to remember! I was going to order another movie, but I couldn't remember the name... It was the Cindy Sherman movie! :)

Ok, another three-way! :D I better stop it, or I'll make JP blush... >:(

Be careful, though...the Queen Mary can be cheesy and totally touristy. Think about the Sunday Brunch and a simple walk around the ship with a self-guided tour. :)
JP is my brother and Keely my little mommy...what? That explains my height and size, I guess.

We should definitely get together on some outing soon...:)

I was thinking of that... Hmm, some of them have balloon tours too - that might be cool. :)

I could just see you now with your parents on that ballloon, and suddenly, you alone, falling from that balloon. :D

I did the balloon tour thing over the wineries. Found it kind of boring actually, and it was before I started skydiving. You just float over the wineries, and it was kind of like, okay this cool, sort of like wizard of oz, but now what? The thing I liked best was that it wasn't a very windy day so they used up the propane going up and down trying to catch the winds and we had to make an emergency landing off the usual landing area. Added a little excitment to the trip ;).

Hey, if you go to the Queen Mary, I'd recommend you spend a little more time around Long Beach.

For dinner, I'd recommend that you take the parents to Shoreline Village for dinner. http://www.shorelinevillage.com/ The Parkers Lighthouse for dinner, the Yardhouse for beer and food.

Great place to be.
