wmw999 2,589 #1 October 26, 2004 My son is a foreign student in Sydney right now, and has asked me to research seafood restaurants... Any ideas? He said that so far suggestions have not been impressive, and he's asked me to go find a guidebook to Sydney at the book store. He's not really looking for cheap-but-edible, but neither is he looking for something that's in the $60 US per plate range (he is a student). Ideas? And yes, I'll look in a guidebook too (we used one for London last year that was full of good suggestions, so I'll probably look for the same brand one for Sydney). thanks Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Tonto 1 #2 October 26, 2004 My knowledge of restaurants in Sydney is uncurrent... But he has to eat "Morton Bay Bugs" Don't be put off by the name. They're about the size of Tiger Giants... and delicious! tIt's the year of the Pig.
Stumpy 284 #3 October 26, 2004 From memory, the best seafood restaurant i went to in Sydney was Doyle's in Watsons bay - but i didn't have to pay and i can't remember average cover price. There is also a Doyle's in the rocks right underneath the harbour bridge. The other memorable one i went to was in Darling harbour, can't remember the name but its outside the mall there and has big blue umbrellas outside it! Again though, it may be expensive. For some smaller but still good places, i would venture out to some of the better suburbs like balmain and have a look around there, as well as your obvious places like manly etc. Sorry i can't remember anything more specific, i blame the alcohol.... Lainey 0 #4 October 26, 2004 the two i can think of are: Doyels in Watsons Bay or there is also one near circular quay: http://www.doyles.com.au/ Jordans is another nice one in Darling Harbour http://www.sydney.com.au/darling-restaur-jordans.htm Eat the Balmain Bugs!!! bob.dino 1 #5 October 26, 2004 Make sure he eats at the restaurant rather than the outdoor bistro thingy at Doyles. Much nicer.
bob.dino 1 #6 October 26, 2004 Eatability is usually a pretty good guide. I can't give too much in the way of personal recommendations, as I'm not a huge seafood fan...
Deuce 1 #7 October 26, 2004 OMG. They had these things called "balmane (sp) bugs" which were so freaking good to eat. They were the ugliest things I've ever eaten, kind of like trilobytes. But they were so good. I have no idea how much they cost now, but the crustaceans they had were delicious, and wierd.
CornishChris 5 #8 October 27, 2004 Rockpool is considered the best seafood restuarant in Sydney and has been rated as one of the top in the world. Doyles is good but suffering a little from it's own popularity. The Watson's bay set up now has 3 restaurants and a bistro (good for fish & chips) and the Circular key one just isn't that great anymore. I went to Doyles 5 tiomes in two months last year as everyone from overseas visted and wanted to go and I really think it has gone downhill. Seafood is generally good in Sydney and if Rockpool is too expensive then Doyles is still worth a visit, if with an element of perspective added. Next question? bob.dino 1 #9 October 27, 2004 Unfortunately, I'd imagine $160/head is a little out of the price range of a student .
