pilotdave 0 #3 October 26, 2004 Well, probably wont help but I was getting tons of spam from one company (using a lot of different company names). I tracked down the parent company that they were coming from, and had a chat with a lawyer there today. Very friendly, and no more emails from them. And I learned a lot about the world of spam. My favorite part... Me: "you do popup ads too, right?" him: "yes, we do those too" me: "out of curiosity, do you use a popup blocker at home?" him: "at home? no." me: "do you use a popup blocker at work?" him: "well, yeah, but only because it was part of service pack 2" me: "don't you find that ironic?" him: "no, we just have to use it because our computer people make us" He was too nice for me to tell him I think his company is the scum of the earth. But I had my fun. Dave
Opie 0 #4 October 26, 2004 I use yahoo for my email and they do a great job of screening out spam and they scan with Norten antivirus before you get it.
tigra 0 #5 October 26, 2004 My SBC account (part of Yahoo, I think) is waaaaay better at filtering spam than my MSN account was. Just to add- my SBC account has a "spam filter" you need to turn on. See if there is a way to customize your email account to do that. I discovered that while my spam filter was on, my boyfriend's (who uses the same computer) was not. And, being a guy, he clicked on some of those nasty links and I had a really hard time getting rid of all the pornographic pop ups! I had to download a free search and destroy program to get rid of them!
sunshine 2 #6 October 26, 2004 Don't let your boyfreind use your computer anymore. Like Opie said, yahoo is awesome at filtering out the spam. It's what i use and i love it. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
DrewEckhardt 0 #7 October 26, 2004 Quote[How do I stop this??? ] Not using E-mail is the only way to avoid 100% of this. Bayesian filters will stop 99.5% of your spam. Challenge-response systems like Spam Arrest also do a good job now, although if they become popular spam hauses will start hiring people who work cheap in third world countries. pilotdave 0 #8 October 27, 2004 The plot has thickened in my fight against spam... I had forwarded a couple of spams to the company that they came from to check out. Well I actally got a call back. Turns out that at least one (if not all of them) actually came from a direct competitor of the spam company, but with their name on it. Long story short. Their domain is registered through a 3rd party to hide their information (ironically normally used to avoid spammers). I talked to them and forwarded one of the spams to their legal department. If it is found to be in violation of their terms of service (which are pretty strict), they could shut down the domain. So maybe I just stopped a spammer...for a day or an hour or whatever it would take them to register with someone else. But it made me happy! tigra 0 #9 October 27, 2004 I don't know if it does any good, but I "report" all of my unsolicited email as Spam, by clicking on the "spam" button. I'm not sure how effective it is, but I do get far less with my SBC yahoo account than I ever did with MSN. And somehow, reporting it makes me feel a little better!
