starting Caving/Spelunking

So i live in one of the states with the most caves ever. I want to explore them. I know there has to be some sort of society or group that does this, but I cannot find them.

Isn't there a spelunker society somewhere?
Anyone in here a caver?

Running amock in caves doesn't take much more tha a flashlight and a plan for simple short looks underground. If ya want to get deep into it, ye really need to get in with a group of experienced folks. The park service should be able to point you in the right direction as well as let you know the local caves which are safe for crawlin about and the ones with hazards or endanged species (think the ol' flyin mice) that you should/must leave alone. Cool hobby tho.

That would be kentucky. I've always heard that there are some bigass caves here (besides mammoth).

My sister would know more as she has been actively involved in caving (I'm told a caver differs from a spelunker in that cavers are often sent to rescue spelunkers...)

There is a very large caving community in the KY area. I can ask my sister for some information/contacts as to the best approach to get involved.

my sister got into her caving club in college.. she had lots of fun... i gues youhave to atch out, fromwhatshe said theyare like skydivers whenthey party after a good day downin the caves.... she went to a few difrent caves aroundohio and ky.... think the best inthe area are down in ky.if ya want i could get somemore info from her....

Geez! Man, that stuff is Dangerous!!!!
You could get hurt doing anything more than a guided tour (Mammoth comes to mind).

Look for local gratos (caving clubs) on the Internet. Joining your local grato is probably the best way to get into caving.

I used to do quite a bit when I lived in the TN. area.

I did some cave diving here in FL.

Basic rules...Someone on here said take a flash light......No, take 3 sources of light.

If you can see the exit light, that counts as one, and unless you get some training I would not go any farther that you can see the exit.

Never go alone, and even then tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
